Invaluable reference for working legal writers
By John Ackermann
I don't normally post reviews -- in fact, this is the first one I've ever done -- but I thought I should create a counterpoint to the one negative review listed for this book. I'm an in-house attorney who does a lot of contract and other drafting. I use this book constantly, and I've encouraged the non-lawyer contract managers I work with to buy it, too. You may be able to find this stuff on-line, but it's invaluable to have one well-organized place to answer just about all the common questions that come up when doing legal writing.

The price has gone up considerably since I bought my first copy ten or fifteen years ago, but if you write, if you care about writing, and if your time is worth anything, this book is well worth having.

"Read aloud any sections that are not working .... You may hear problems that you cannot see."
By Donald P. Reed
Legal Writing: Getting It Right & Getting It Written, Mary Ray & Jill Ramsfield; West Publishing Co. (2nd Edition; 1993; paperback)

"Legal Writing" is now in its 5th edition. While my own copy is of the 2nd edition, given the authors' timeless good humor & integrity, please consider the advice offered below to be valid.

*****

As the only legal book I've reviewed (for abundant good reason), LW is warmly endorsed, even if you yourself are on the run from the law.

It was acquired by classroom fiat ("Buy it") when I attended a six-month-long, NYU graded-course on Paralegaling, which, if truth be told, turned out to be somewhat more strenuous than getting ready to run along the planks on a wooden dock with the boat pilot down below preparing to give the engine full throttle.

It remains only one of the two books thus acquired that survived the purge after it was decided, without much strenuous thought being necessary due to the plethora of depressing evidence, that to continue to pursue a career as a paralegal in the city of New York would be to voluntarily join the ranks of the original slave-labor battalions assembled to build The Bridge on The River Kwai*.

I still find LW helpful, & reviewing it tonight, I see that I need to consult it more often. The advice offered by Mary Ray & Jill Ramsfield deftly transcends the narrower realm of the law & can be quite useful for all writers who need a competent map of the ins & outs of effective writing.

The beneficial influence of Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style" is obvious; their refreshing sense of humor is their own; & LW is a very versatile, to-the-point & well-organized guide to the maddening realities of trying to express ourselves coherently.

Apparently, few lawyers have read it.

*A consensus about this conclusion apparently exists. On a trip to Kentucky years ago, we stopped in a town in Virginia, & after lunch, wandered into a Civil War museum housed in the town's former town hall.

As it happened, we were the only two visitors & the museum director as an impromptu host was the very essence of Southern hospitality --- until, in a carefree moment, I innocently mentioned that I had graduated from NYU as a certified paralegal.

Instantly, the assembled stocks of unexploded ammunition dug up from the battlefields outside of town were now a mite bit too close to us, with the cascading flames rising in waves from her hair, her voice & her eyes.

Evidently, in her own previous career as a paralegal for ten years in a large Richmond firm, on various occasions, she had come into involuntary contact with New York City lawyers who made it clear that their brusque & impervious opinions were the only ones in the world that mattered.

The tour was concluded somewhat hastily, thereafter, as you can imagine.

whatever
By Adam Woodrum
Woo Hoo, another outrageously overpriced softbound pamphlet designed to bilk hardworking law students out of a few more bucks. Well, that was my first impression especially considering my professor's announcement that "they give [him] lots of free books." Gee, wonder why!
Anyway, this is a grammar reference that clarifies some fine distinctions and is organized like an encyclopedia, with topics such as "when or if" and "that or which." The thing is, it's nothing you can't get from the Internet or in another, less costly grammar manual. If you don't have to, don't bother buying this book. I wouldn't buy it if I didn't have to.
Thanks for reading.
