Weaving drama, tragedy, and politics against the backdrop of a world-famous city, The Final Leap is the first book ever written about Golden Gate Bridge suicides. John Bateson leads us on a fascinating journey that uncovers the reasons for the design decision that led to so many deaths, provides insight into the phenomenon of suicide, and examines arguments for and against a suicide barrier. He tells the stories of those who have died, the few who have survived, and those who have been affectedfrom loving families to the Coast Guard, from the coroner to suicide prevention advocates.

From the Inside Flap
Extremely well done. It’s the single most important contribution to the debate surrounding suicide and the Golden Gate Bridge to date.” -Thomas Joiner, author of Lonely at the Top and Why People Die by Suicide
John Bateson takes us on a gripping journey through the lives of everyone who has been affected. He boldly counters myths with facts, eloquently speaks of the unspeakable, and helps us all to care about those who, in an instant, stopped caring about themselves. This book stirs the soul to fight for the day when the protective net is finally cast under the Golden Gate Bridge, when it will become a national monument to both beauty and compassion.”John Draper, Director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Far Too Many Broken Hearts ...
By Mark A. Johnson
Most people do not know how many deaths occur at the bridge month in and month out every year. Most people also don't know that a net that would prevent those deaths was approved by the Bridge Authority in 2008, but was never installed because the money has not been allocated.
I was in that population of "most people" blissfully unaware of those two facts until my son jumped to his death from the bridge last year.
Mr.Bateson has written a thorough, eloquent and fair history of suicide on the bridge and the madness of allowing these deaths to continue. This book should be in the hands of many more people -- and particularly those who wish to change the two facts above.

Thank you
By P. Sennett
I want to thank John Bateson for his book about suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge. I will never look at the
Golden Gate the same way again and indeed I have an entirely different regard for San Francisco. I used to see the place as a progessive city, now I see it is a back water town peopled by governing forces (Bridge District Commissioners of the Golden Gate) who are provincial snobs and ignorant. Every time I cross a bridge, over pass or see a tall structure in the Chicago area, I am looking for a suicide barrier. The tall fencing I often see on these structures is probably there not to keep people from leaping off, as much as it there to keep people from throwing trash on traffice below. Thank you John Bateson for your excellent book covering all aspects of the Bridge, barriers, and suicide: topics that are new to me except that I had to look back over my life and realize that I have known eight peolpe who have died by suicide.

Bateson Boldly Lifts the Veil On A San Francisco Secret
By Jones Matter
With literary ease and journalistic candor, John Bateson's indispensable read, "The Final Leap," gives readers the first comprehensive look at one of San Francisco's dark secrets. Since its construction in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge (one of the Seven Wonders of the World,) has been the site of more suicides than any other place on the planet. With his accessible style of story-telling and wealth of information, Bateson ably takes us on a journey over the 76 years of the bridge's life-span and explores the lives of all those who have been involved with one of the nearly 2,000 people who have leapt to their death. From the people who have leapt from the bridge, to the loved ones they have left behind, to the police officers, coroners, and phsychologists who deal with the aftermath of a jump, to the organization that oversees the daily operations of the bridge, Bateson covers all bases, as he fearlessly addresses the taboo topics of mental illness and suicide in this valuable and timely book.
