This book by internationally known writer, composer, teacher and lecturer Seymour Bernstein expounds upon topics touched on in his bestseller With Your Own Two Hands (HL50482589). Bernstein teaches readers the truth about performing careers, offering insights and advice on both personal and musical issues. In Part 2, he discusses the importance of music education, covering both "monster" and "angel" teachers, managers and critics. Bernstein believes that everyone has a right to develop whatever talent they have, for self-fulfillment and self-development, if not necessarily for a career.

Excellent!!!
By Amy C
This book is biography, psychological study, and musical commentary all rolled in to one. His biography would be fascinating standing on its own- from his Jewish upbringing in Newark, NJ, to his involvement in the Korean war (and his harrowing stories from that time in his life), wealthy patronesses, famous piano teachers, and the sort. But he also graces us with brilliant observations on music and faith, piano playing, and challenges the system that schools such as Julliard implement.
Mr. Bernstein has written a gem of a book. Though it is not instructional along the lines of "With Your Own Two Hands", I think it offers plenty of inspiration by way of his own life. Those who are studying music as a profession will find it interesting to see how a person managed to have an excellent career and overcome many difficulties. Those who, like I, are considered "Professional Amateurs" will find inspiration and solace in Mr. Bernstein's advice to those who truly love music but wish not to make it a profession. And those curious about how the music world works will be regaled with wonderful, sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, stories about the musician's life.

A book that deserves more recognition
By Harriet
"Monsters and Angels" is a memoir that is full of many deeply felt observations about a life in music. The "monsters" of Bernstein's title include not only bad teachers but others he has come across who have been forces of negativity of one sort or another. However, although one senses that these are stories he has probably wanted to put to paper for many years, Bernstein's overall approach is not negative or vindictive. He tries to understand his monsters and what made them that way, and he expresses compassion for them. There is some bitterness about opportunities missed but also serenity in his acceptance and appreciation for what life has offered him. He also creates affectionate portraits of "angels" -- people who were positive presences in his life -- and some who had a little of both qualities.
I felt many jolts of recognition about experiences with teachers, in music schools, practicing, and performing. The section describing his stint in the Army is fascinating and could be a book in itself. I greatly appreciated the many passages in the book describing what it was actually like for him to play in public -- both the angst and the pleasure -- and how he prepared, how hard it was for him to judge the worth of his own performances (many times when he felt he didn't play well the reactions of others were quite different), how he learned what he learned.
I deeply appreciate this book. I only wish I had read it years ago. I recommend it highly to anyone who is involved with or interested in classical music.
And btw, it is NOT out of print. It is readily available from Manduca Music: [...]

It is okay, but it is not wonderful
By Tom Rose
I Bought this because I greatly enjoyed, and learned a lot, from the author's masterpiece "With Your Own Two Hands". My expectations were high. As a result I was mildly disappointed by Bernstein's autobiography.
