Literary Nonfiction. Hybrid Genre. Poetry. Fiction. Art. Cultural Studies. When we talk about hybrid literary genres, what do we mean? Unprecedented in both its scope and approach, FAMILY RESEMBLANCE is the first anthology to explore the answer to that question in depth, providing craft essays and examples of hybrid forms by 43 distinguished authors. In this study of eight hybrid genres—including lyric essay, epistolary, poetic memoir, prose poetry, performative, short-form nonfiction, flash fiction, and pictures made of words—the family tree of hybridity takes delightful shape, showcasing how cross-genre works blend features from multiple literary parents to create new entities, forms that feel more urgent than ever in today's increasingly heterogeneous landscape. Introductions and an afterword discuss the importance and current popularity of hybridity in literature and culture and offer methods for teaching hybrid works. Intended for both scholarly and general readers, this seminal collection sparkles with inventiveness and creative zeal—an essential guidebook to a developing field.

Review
“Sulak and Kolosov have assembled a mighty collection of essayists and poets, including Maggie Nelson, Terrance Hayes, EtgarKeret, Nick Flynn, and David Shields, and their insights into their own creative processes give the book its value.” PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
“Family Resemblance is an extraordinarily rich anthology, intelligently conceived and artfully arranged--full of essential readings that offer clarity while keeping alive the mystery of the hybrid form.”LIA PURPURA
“If there is one way to contain all that hybrid texts can be, this book does it. With open arms, FamilyResemblancebrings together video, napkins, electrons the size of gnats, Hot Wheels, Yvor Winters, Laura Petrie, chess, homebirth, the color blue, a guy named Jason, a woman named Mary, Santa Claus, Malcolm X, card catalogues, perfect heavens, graphics, and maps. The plentitude of subjects embodies the plentitude of form. This book creates its own hybrid, binding discourses, making them snap with electricity.”NICOLE WALKER
“Family Resemblance is one of those all-too-rare literary anthologies that’s as informative for contemporary writers and their readers as it is for students learning about contemporary writers. Surprise, risk, the energy of the new; the work collected here engages literary history while doing things that have never been done, and readers will take away a broader sense of creative possibilities in writing.” MARK WALLACE

An Inspiring Exploration of the Hybrid Form
By RL Black
Rose Metal Press has done it again! Family Resemblance, edited by Marcela Sulak and Jaqueline Kolosov, is not only an exceptional tool for the craft, but also a vivid example of the craft. In much the same style as their Field Guides to Flash Fiction, the Prose Poem, and Flash Nonfiction, Family Resemblance brings us craft essays from 43 different authors, and then also gives us gorgeous examples of the forms. The hybrid is defined and showcased here, but without any futile attempt to cage or confine it.
The anthology covers 8 hybrid forms–the lyric essay, the epistolary, the poetic memoir, prose poetry (my favorite), performative, short-form nonfiction, flash fiction, and pictures made of words. And whether you want to learn more about the different creative forms, or just enjoy reading them, you’ll find plenty here to love.
I have a huge crush on all things hybrid and experimental because I like the tangible, textural feel of those pieces, and I find myself gravitating toward the edgy kind of journals that publish it–journals like Threadcount, Rivet, theEEL, and DIAGRAM. And Family Resemblance has allowed me to take a closer look at these forms that inspire me. If you like that kind of work as much as I do, you are going to cherish and appreciate Family Resemblance. Go grab a copy now!
Huge thanks to Rose Metal Press for sending me a review copy of Family Resemblance–I shall hold it close forever!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
By Ever Bradley
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!
Aside from giving me immense personal reading pleasure, FAMILY RESEMBLANCE has absolutely solved
my curriculum problem for next fall’s grad forms class on the lyric essay and other hybrid forms. I’d already started collecting
books and essays and prose poems etc. for the class, but Holy Hybrid! this book is outstanding. I can't wait to share
it with my student writers. A wonderful array of process essays and original hybrid work, plus some of the best intro essays by
editors that I've seen on the subject. Congratulations to Marcela Sulak, Jacqueline Kolosov and to all the writers (you truly outdid yourselves), and to Rose Metal Press: what lovers of the word you are. Thank you!

Like their excellent field guide trilogy
By Critical Angst
In the preface to this extraordinary book Marcela Sulak speaks to the “alchemy of genre mallebillity” her claim is “new alchemy, new fields of play.” Sulak accepts that genres are imaginary guidelines, but they are helpful, if imperfect tools. This book shows us some new games to play in the undisputable category that is writing. Like their excellent field guide trilogy, this book is inspiring to readers, writers and teachers.
