I really, really, REALLY wanted to like this but it is very dry and kind of hard to read. I found that it stopped being inspirational and started feeling like an instruction manual. This is not a statement towards Louise, I've heard some of her interviews and she's pretty great. This is on her editor.

Is she kidding?

I would have taken these comments private but the lady's just too precious for direct communication. Nearly every entry is for a word that is common knowledge for anyone of voting age. Worse are the errors. "Through the ringer?" It doesn't even make sense. The phrase is actually "through the wringer," which refers to putting an article of wet clothing from the washing tub through the wringer portion that would squeeze the cloth very tightly. This left the cloth merely damp. In other words, put in a situation of extreme pressure.

i just adore yester-yore, and this book is a mentally sugary treat! from the embossed brown and robin's egg blue cover, to the delightful end papers, this book is a quality and well thought out production (would we expect anything less from chronicle books?).

this illustrated "encyclopedia" of all things nostalgic brought up many happy memories, as there are so many items, phrases, and images that made me smile, giggle, or just take a moment to think, and that alone would have been worth the purchase of the book. the bonus is that it is filled with useful information!

the author's introduction i found equally delightful, as it was a lovely glimpse into her whimsical mind.

i am hard pressed to round out this review other than to list a few of the entries that most made me tilt my head and think "oh, yes, THAT!"

all white rooms (indeed! stanley kubrick me up.)
the barbizon hotel (divine!)
bloomers (i still wish i had a pair)
cobblestone streets (makes me nostalgic for living in europe)
divinity (so very tasty)
gaslit streetlamps (atmospheric in every way)
messages in bottles (wouldn't it be lovely to find one? i mean really find one?)
pianos (i will never be without one)
posture (sadly neglected)
roller skates (i've got my own and love them!)
skating parties (had an epic one last year and will do so again)
the word "swell" (polite and snarky at the same time)
themed rooms (i'd love one)
typewriters (love my 30's underwood)

i could keep going, but i believe you have the idea. perhaps this is an odd review, however it is difficult to sum this book up other than to say, it's just swell. and i mean that in the sincere way. :)

This book brings back the charm!

You can tell that a great deal of love and thought went into writing this book. I'm about a third of the way through and find myself nodding and smiling at the turn if every page. I've long felt that I was originally from another era and think the author probably was as well. We have exchanged far too many good behaviours in for what have become slovenly comforts and bad manners. We've traded in politeness, backbones and thoughtfully handwritten letters for hunching over mobiles during dinner dates. We've lost a sense of self-pride in dressing for work, shopping, travelling by instead wearing our pajama pants in public. I hope by reading this that people will bring back bits and pieces of the past into their own lives. I think we'll all be better people for it.

sturdy and attractive

A collection of eleven short stories from what is arguably Wodehouse's most creative period - the mid-1930s. The book includes one of the funniest stories in the English language, "Uncle Fred Flits By", but all are of the highest caliber. Eight of the stories are Drones Club centered (Freddie Widgeon, et al) and the other three are Mulliner tales. The contents of this volume are from the original English edition, which is the much preferred version. The American edition deleted "Tried in the Furnace", and "Trouble Down at Tudsleigh" (both of which are first-class Wodehouse), and substituted three middling golf stories. This is the one to get. The Overlook Press editions are well-produced, sturdy and attractive. Highly recommended in all respects!

The master of humor, language, and subversive comedies of manners

An amusing collection of eleven stories by the master of humor, or language, and of subversive comedies of manners. These are mostly stories from the Drones Club, where people are frequently referred to by what they are eating or drinking. Most of the drones are rather silly upperclass men, not quite as personable as Bertie Wooster, and without a Jeeves to preserve them from their follies. The stories are all at least amusing, but I think the standout is "The Amazing Hat Mystery." The reader, at least I hope all readers, will easily spot what has happened, but the two Drones involved are utterly clueless.

"Uncle Fred Flits By" is the first of the Uncle Fred series, and I thought it was hysterical. One of the most intelligent of Wodehouse's peers, Frederick, Earl of Ickenham, spends most of his time on his estates, more or less kept in order by his wife, but he escapes to London now and again to the chagrin of his nephew, "Pongo" Twistleton. Something of a trickster figure, he merrily sows confusion among the hapless people that he meets, and bringing his reluctant accomplice close to nervous prostration. As soon as I read it, I ordered the next book in the series, which happily is also in the Blandings series.

Also in this book are three Mr. Mulliner stories, told at his favorite pub, the Angler's Rest. Mulliner spins out long, involved tales of the adventures of his family members.

Destroy the dustcover, but keep the book

This collection is full of pleasure, not least because of the very first appearance of Uncle Fred spreading sweetness and light wherever he passes. The rest of the stories are as good as anyone could wish, but Uncle Fred is clearly and deservedly the favorite. At the risk of reducing its value as a collector's item at some distant future point, though, I strongly recommend removing and destroying the dust-jacket. Admittedly, the horrendous artwork does appear to have some sort of reference to one of the stories inside, but if I were that story I would prefer not to be referred to in that manner. I feel a sharp pain in my eye every time I take it down from the shelf to browse.

Great book to read when you need rabbinical guidance

I know Rabbi Zelig has written other books since this 1983 one, and I can't help wondering if most of his later books are "updated" snippets from this book. I'd appreciate any feedback from other owners of multiple Zelig books, if anyone can answer this question for me. The only negative comment I can make is that over the 25 yrs I've read and carefully handled this poorly-bound paperback, most of the pages have come unglued from the paper cover, and I must keep the book in a plastic Ziploc bag now. Definitely worth purchasing the hardcover version for a few extra bucks!

The best book on happiness.

I think this is the most comprehensive book on happiness I've ever read. Rabbi Pliskin has chapters dealing with everything you could imagine that could rob you of your happiness. He has chapters dealing with worry, sadness, friendship, living in the present, anger, guilt, suffering, preventing problems, envy, desires, grief, discouragement and many more.
The most incredible components of this book and the segments that make it great are the first four chapters. They are Chapter 1: Happiness is an obligation, Chapter 2: Appreciating what you have, Chapter 3: Happiness is dependent on your thoughts, and Chapter 4: Peace of mind. These four chapters include the best thinking and teaching explanations on happiness.
