Excellent Controls Primer.

I suppose it should go without saying that a book about VB-5 Control Creation Edition would be a little beyond the level of introductory programming. After all, that software package was never intended for beginners as it was designed expressly for creating controls to be used in other programs. This isn't to say that a standard program can't be written with CCE and that it can't be used to learn the language, but that is not its purpose. Microsoft included a compiler that works only for controls creation and not for standard programs. Standard programs can be written and 'run' within the development ide, but cannot be compiled into executables for stand-alone use.

The author takes a gradual approach to controls building, starting with some simple designs before tackling web and database access. This book won't make anyone a controls 'guru' but it will teach the fundamentals. After completing this book a person should have a solid understanding of controls and should be able to build on that foundation and create controls of their own design. There are certainly many more advanced books available, books that contain a lot more depth of material, but for someone trying to learn from the ground up they might prove to be a bit daunting.

Well, here it is 2013 and Active-X is an old technology. And yet, Visual Basic 6.0 (and probably 5.0 as well) is still hanging around doing valuable work for people who want an easy-to-program platform for rapidly deploying applications. I guess this means that Active-X isn't quite dead just yet and this book still has a purpose in life. For those interested, Microsoft pulled the plug on VB-5 CCE a few years ago and it has become rather hard to find nowdays. Some diligent searching on the web is almost guaranteed to result in a good download, though, so don't give up. If you already have VB-5 or VB-6 you can make use of this book without the CCE since both of those platforms include that functionality built in.

Great book even though its out of date!

This book is a dream! It explains in a few, well written words what ActiveX controls are, how they differ from regular programs, and what are the parts that you must code to make them work. That means even though 5.0 was long ago and far away, it was still easy for me to create controls today because I understood what "parts" made up the "whole". This book is a thin book. It has been my experience that thin computer books are either garbage, or condensed jewels of knowledge that don't need a lot of words to get their point across. This book falls into the latter category.

I wanted to learn something about Control Creation

However, I began to hit a brick wall with some of the examples (after the 5th chapter). Book assumes you know VB language, and that you just need to know how to use it to create activeX controls. Although it wasn't as helpful as I had hoped, I did give it 4 stars because a VB programmer WILL find this book useful. And the stuff that I could do made for some great learning about control creation.

There are so many great things to say about Being Human, I don't even know where to begin. Strong characters and beautiful, primal lessons make it hard to put this book down. Written for teens and young adults, C. Nielson Taylor's writing style and wisdom has you hooked from the beginning, making it a great read for any age group. I love that it was written for the younger generation because those are the people who will be taking on the world one day and Being Human offers a lot of food for thought about how "civilized" we really are. I'm really looking forward to the reading next book and seeing how the story develops.

For all of you parents of young adults, and for all of the adults who love to read ANY good book, I just finished "Being Human", by C. Nielson Taylor. A fantastic read for these times we live in.Rich characters, great message, and part one of a trilogy! I would highly recommend it as a Christmas gift, and would like to see it in schools as well. It was so nice to read a book that not only thoroughly entertains, but also provides much food for thought. I highly recommend this book. C. Nielson Taylor has delivered us an amazing first novel. I am very much looking forward to the next book!!!!!!

Loved it! Can't wait for the next book in the series which is suppose to be out sometime next year!

I was totally drawn into the story before I even finished the first page! Taylor's writing style is refreshingly spontaneous and intriguing as she skillfully develops both the characters and the plot from several angles at once. This book was obviously written for young adult readers, but I couldn't put it down. I can hardly wait for her 2nd book in the series! I gave it five stars, as Taylor is not only a skilled writer and storyteller, but the life lessons contained within these pages are valuable for readers young and old alike.Being Human

About the Author
Steven E. Schier is Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science at Carleton College, where he has taught the last thirty years. He also directs the Carleton in Washington program, an off-campus term of study he founded in 1983. Schier is the author or co-author of seven books, including Panorama of a Presidency: How George W. Bush Acquired and Spent His Political Capital (2008) which won an “outstanding academic book” award from Choice magazine. He has edited six books, including The Postmodern President: Bill Clinton’s Legacy in U.S. Politics (2000) and High Risk and Big Ambition: The Presidency of George W. Bush (2004). Schier has written about Obama’s election in his recent book The American Elections of 2008 (2008), coedited with Janet Box-Steffensmeier. His most recent works are the edited volumes Ambition and Division: Legacies of the George W. Bush Presidency (2009),Transforming America: Barack Obama in the White House (2011) and the thirteenth edition of Presidential Elections: Strategies and Structures of American Politics, coauthored with Nelson W. Polsby, Aaron Wildavsky and David A. Hopkins (2011).

Todd Eberly is Chair of the Political Science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He specializes in social welfare policy as well as partisanship and polarization in American politics. Professor Eberly’s first book, American Government and Popular Discontent was released in June, 2013. His second book, The Rise of Ideology in America, is expected from Rowman and Littlefield in early 2016. He has served as an expert witness in Voting Rights Act challenges to gerrymandered Congressional districts and has consulted with the centrist organization Third Way. He was named one of the most influential voices in Maryland politics by Campaigns and Elections magazine. In 2010, the St. Mary’s College Student Government Association honored him with the Faculty Student Life Award. He lives in Southern MD with his wife and two daughters.

Great, Compact Makeup Tips

Great makeup tips. I really enjoyed the section on how to do makeup for different facial features and types. She has a unique eye and some easy ways to spruce up your look. I also liked the easy to follow photographs and illustrations that accompany the text. Very well done.

About the Author
Dr. Berg is an award-winning teacher and textbook author. She received a B.S. in science education, an M.S. in botany, and a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of Maryland. Her research focused on the evolutionary implications of steroid biosynthetic pathways in various organisms. Dr. Berg taught at the University of Maryland at College Park for 17 years and at St. Petersburg College in Florida for 8 years. During her career, she taught introductory courses in biology, botany, and environmental science to thousands of students. At the University of Maryland, she received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards, including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching. During her career as a professional science writer, Dr. Berg has authored or co-authored several leading college science textbooks. Her writing reflects her teaching style and love of science.

Pretty great intro to botany textbook. I bought this for my Introduction to Botany course at the University of Florida. It was an edition behind what everyone else was using, but the information was the same. The chapters are in different orders sometimes, but it's still the same book essentially. I learned a lot from this book. Great textbook that's not dry and not overly difficult to read.

Great primer for a new parent, wish I had 10 years ago.

I was recently thrust into the position of a single dad with primary custody of my two daughters. I had to quickly go from workaholic absent father to full time Dad and substitute mom to a teenager and young daughter. After about a year of figuring out I didn't know how to effectively parent, I started to seek books and chat with the kids' therapist about parenting. Most books are incrediblhy long but I read a few. Therapy is expensive but provides valuable insights. I recently received this book and wished something like this was available long ago. It's a great primer for a new parent to set a general tone to raising kids. From the various books I've read and the numerous chats with child psychologists, this book highlights the most important points to raising good kids, being a supportive and loving parent. Yeah, it's that simple and the books helps you understand why. The book understands that parenting is a tough job, so it's a relatively quick and easy read, so you can absorb the information quickly, and confirm your parent greatness, or effect change as you wish relatively quickly. it's hard to believe when you have young kids stuggling with math that one day things will all come together, but when you get through that first child you do realize that kids figure it out eventually. They get there with support, help, and love. I am not the greatest parent, but I'm trying. This book is a great first resource to a new parent, especially if you feel that your upbringing was not the greatest (mine was not). It was an enjoyable read, I wish I had read this 10 years ago, it would have made it easier on my older daughter for sure. I still struggle with laughing more and yelling less, but it's much improved and I can tell you that philosophy works. Once your kids finds their niche, the sky is the limit, the key is just giving them the support to find it, then it's magical. We've had a mini baby boom at my office, I loaded up on about 15 of Dr. Zeitland's books and will give them out as little presents since I thought the book was that good, it's worth a read for any new parent. If you want a book to digest in a weekend that can give you the basic tools to being a great parent to your wonderful kids, I think this book is a great start. If you read other books, I can assure you, you'll see many of the themes mentioned buried in many more pages and chapters. Take an hour and read this book, your kids will thank you.....

Yes Virginia, There is Hope For Your Parents.

My partner, Derek, and I have a five-year-old. And we own a business together. And we live together. And we parent together! Often a recipe for tension. A read like "Laugh More, Yell Less" was a welcome adventure in not taking ourselves too seriously. Zeitlin had us laughing from page two on - sharing his own experience as a dad and husband, his professional expertise (many years of therapy work) and his good natured optimism that we may somehow avoid screwing our kids up forever. Phew! This is a sweet and easy-to-return-to (as in we'll probably be referencing it in those white knuckle moments) read that we highly recommend for new parents, expecting parents and anyone who may find themselves trapped on an airplane with small children. Highly recommend!

Great Advice and Support for Parents

This is an easy, fun read for busy parents! It’s a great reminder of how important it is to live in the present moment, keep your perspective and be more understanding toward your child and yourself. It’s about the power of positive parenting and making meaningful connections, seemingly simple ideas that are easily forgotten in the midst of a busy life. Dr. Zeitlin shares some of his own parenting struggles, all of which are relatable. Those little vignettes remain memorable during the moments I find myself in similar situations. The parenting guide is framed in creative, “super-power” metaphors, keeping things interesting and easy to remember. Since finishing the book, I feel more confident as a family leader and a loving mom.
