About the Author
Dr. Berg is an award-winning teacher and textbook author. She received a B.S. in science education, an M.S. in botany, and a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of Maryland. Her research focused on the evolutionary implications of steroid biosynthetic pathways in various organisms. Dr. Berg taught at the University of Maryland at College Park for 17 years and at St. Petersburg College in Florida for 8 years. During her career, she taught introductory courses in biology, botany, and environmental science to thousands of students. At the University of Maryland, she received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards, including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching. During her career as a professional science writer, Dr. Berg has authored or co-authored several leading college science textbooks. Her writing reflects her teaching style and love of science.

Pretty great intro to botany textbook. I bought this for my Introduction to Botany course at the University of Florida. It was an edition behind what everyone else was using, but the information was the same. The chapters are in different orders sometimes, but it's still the same book essentially. I learned a lot from this book. Great textbook that's not dry and not overly difficult to read.

Great primer for a new parent, wish I had 10 years ago.

I was recently thrust into the position of a single dad with primary custody of my two daughters. I had to quickly go from workaholic absent father to full time Dad and substitute mom to a teenager and young daughter. After about a year of figuring out I didn't know how to effectively parent, I started to seek books and chat with the kids' therapist about parenting. Most books are incrediblhy long but I read a few. Therapy is expensive but provides valuable insights. I recently received this book and wished something like this was available long ago. It's a great primer for a new parent to set a general tone to raising kids. From the various books I've read and the numerous chats with child psychologists, this book highlights the most important points to raising good kids, being a supportive and loving parent. Yeah, it's that simple and the books helps you understand why. The book understands that parenting is a tough job, so it's a relatively quick and easy read, so you can absorb the information quickly, and confirm your parent greatness, or effect change as you wish relatively quickly. it's hard to believe when you have young kids stuggling with math that one day things will all come together, but when you get through that first child you do realize that kids figure it out eventually. They get there with support, help, and love. I am not the greatest parent, but I'm trying. This book is a great first resource to a new parent, especially if you feel that your upbringing was not the greatest (mine was not). It was an enjoyable read, I wish I had read this 10 years ago, it would have made it easier on my older daughter for sure. I still struggle with laughing more and yelling less, but it's much improved and I can tell you that philosophy works. Once your kids finds their niche, the sky is the limit, the key is just giving them the support to find it, then it's magical. We've had a mini baby boom at my office, I loaded up on about 15 of Dr. Zeitland's books and will give them out as little presents since I thought the book was that good, it's worth a read for any new parent. If you want a book to digest in a weekend that can give you the basic tools to being a great parent to your wonderful kids, I think this book is a great start. If you read other books, I can assure you, you'll see many of the themes mentioned buried in many more pages and chapters. Take an hour and read this book, your kids will thank you.....

Yes Virginia, There is Hope For Your Parents.

My partner, Derek, and I have a five-year-old. And we own a business together. And we live together. And we parent together! Often a recipe for tension. A read like "Laugh More, Yell Less" was a welcome adventure in not taking ourselves too seriously. Zeitlin had us laughing from page two on - sharing his own experience as a dad and husband, his professional expertise (many years of therapy work) and his good natured optimism that we may somehow avoid screwing our kids up forever. Phew! This is a sweet and easy-to-return-to (as in we'll probably be referencing it in those white knuckle moments) read that we highly recommend for new parents, expecting parents and anyone who may find themselves trapped on an airplane with small children. Highly recommend!

Great Advice and Support for Parents

This is an easy, fun read for busy parents! It’s a great reminder of how important it is to live in the present moment, keep your perspective and be more understanding toward your child and yourself. It’s about the power of positive parenting and making meaningful connections, seemingly simple ideas that are easily forgotten in the midst of a busy life. Dr. Zeitlin shares some of his own parenting struggles, all of which are relatable. Those little vignettes remain memorable during the moments I find myself in similar situations. The parenting guide is framed in creative, “super-power” metaphors, keeping things interesting and easy to remember. Since finishing the book, I feel more confident as a family leader and a loving mom.

John MacArthur�is the�pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, where he has served since 1969. He is known around the world for his verse-by-verse expository preaching and his pulpit ministry via his daily radio program, Grace to You.�He has also written or edited nearly four hundred books and study guides. MacArthur serves as the president of the Master’s College and Seminary. He and his wife, Patricia, live in Southern California and have four grown children.

Inerrancy Defined and Defended

From the earliest days of Christianity, the Bible was accepted as the Word of God, inspired and inerrant. It was not until the 18th century that this belief came into question, but since that time, many mainstream evangelicals, people who believingly follow Jesus, have been shaken from their conviction that the Bible is truly “the living voice of God.” In The Scripture Cannot Be Broken, John MacArthur has collected an anthology of fourteen articles, fourteen distinct voices attesting to the truth that Scripture is the very Word of God. With publication dates ranging from 1946 to 1984, the authors, though diverse in style, are one in their adherence to the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy of 1978. The list of contributors reads like a who’s who of twentieth-century theological writers and thinkers, and I would recommend that a future edition include a brief biographical sketch of each contributor, either as an appendix or along with the bibliographical information accompanying their article.

This anthology is no over-simplified pledge-of-allegiance. The writers acknowledge that our faith in God’s inerrant Word will involve “unresolved questions and difficulties with regard to the very content of this faith.” Just as the transcendent mysteries of the Trinity and the incarnation “are not incompatible with unshaken faith, so the questions regarding inerrancy are often “the questions of adoring wonder rather than the questions of painful perplexity,” (Murray, p. 51). Wherever my finite understanding comes into contact with God’s infinite grandeur, theology becomes the gateway to pure worship!

Inerrancy Defined

According to J.I. Packer, one of the murkiest issues in defining the inerrancy and infallibility of the Word of God is that “both have been so variously employed in theological discussions that they now bear no precise meaning at all,” (p. 97). The Scripture Cannot Be Broken addresses objections, clears up misunderstandings, and fine tunes the reader’s understanding of God’s authorship and preservation of His words. Hearkening back to Augustine, Irenaeus, Origen, Aquinas, and a host of others, definitions of inerrancy center around the truth that the Scriptures are a reliable witness to the words and deeds of God through His inspired spokesmen and His incarnate Son, (Preus, p. 222). Articles link inerrancy to inspiration, authority, and infallibility for clarification, since, in defining inerrancy, “we are attempting to do more than merely define a term, we are seeking to formulate a doctrine.” Gordon R. Lewis offers an important analysis of inerrancy as it relates to infallibility: The Bible is inerrant, i.e. errorless, in the truths it asserts; the Bible is infallible in its use of language (words) to affirm the truth that it conveys.

Inerrancy Defended

Given that inerrancy is foundational to orthodoxy, it is worthy of the thorough defense it receives from the pens of these fourteen essayists. Their apologetics center around the witness of Scripture; i.e., the New Testament witnesses to the Old Testament and the organic unity of both testaments provides further internal evidence. Evangelical biblicists are not dependent upon slick mano a mano argumentation whenever doubters raise a supercilious eyebrow. To the objection that we are reasoning in a circle by allowing Scripture to speak for itself, John Frame (an author from the list for further study on page 329) replies that there is no system that does not involve circularity. For example, if one starts with the presupposition that there is no God, every piece of evidence will serve to confirm that belief.

B.B. Warfield masterfully summarizes Christ’s and the sacred writers’ view of Old and New Testament Scripture, and Roger R. Nicole affirms the mystery that human instrumentality and divine influence could combine without compromise. The authors provide abundant and satisfying argumentation and a rich store of Scriptural documentation for their positions, even addressing individual details such as the fact that although copyists did make errors, these inaccuracies affect no more than one one-thousandth part of the text and are insignificant in content.

Twentieth century writings on the doctrine of inerrancy are essential reading, but not because the truthfulness of Scripture is an end in itself. As much as the heart craves a sure word, theology can never be a purely academic discipline. The purpose of the Holy Scriptures is to make the reader “wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” This is an intensely practical concern, for, in the words of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy:

“The authority of Scripture is inescapably impaired if this total divine inerrancy is in any way limited or disregarded, or made relative to a view of truth contrary to the Bible’s own; and such lapses bring serious loss to both the individual and the Church.”

The timeless truth upheld in The Scripture Cannot Be Broken is this: God has spoken, and His Words are preserved for us in the pages of Scripture that we may know Him, obey Him, and love Him in truth. Thanks be to God.

Worth the challenge of reading!

The posture from which you view the Scripture shapes every doctrine you believe. Harold Lindsell said our view of Scripture “is like the Continental Divide in the United States. … Inexorably and inevitably the waters find their way to their ultimate destiny, just as one’s view of the Bible determines ultimately what his theology will be” (25). Therefore, a book like The Scripture Cannot Be Broken comes with the understanding that what you believe about the Scripture affects what you believe about the world. Let’s take a look at the highlights of the book and then make some observations that would be helpful to the reader.

First of all, the book is a compilation with John MacArthur serving as the general editor. He developed the content in a way that moves from a historical perspective of the Scriptures through inerrancy, inspiration, and finally infallibility. In each section there are contributions by leading scholars—past and present—on those specific subjects.

The primacy of the Scriptures and their importance is carried throughout all of the chapters by all of the authors. Therefore, this is not a book with differing views on the issue of bibliology but rather a uniform approach to these varying subjects by like-minded individuals. The editing team has approached each subject with a definition, defense, and identification of what the Scripture says in those areas. For instance, inspiration is started by B.B. Warfield in establishing the parameters, developed by R. Laird Harris for a historical perspective, and finished with Alan Stibbs’ chapter on the Scriptures testimony of inspiration. It offers a comprehensive approach to each subject.

Overall, it is an excellent resource. The Scriptures Cannot Be Broken could not be more timely in its reminder that what you believe about the Scriptures shapes how you view the world. But it also doesn’t commit bibliolatry in the process as seen in phrases like, “It is first and foremost not a book about a book [referring to the Bible], but a book about God, about Christ, about the salvation of man from sin” (117). The contributors have raised the readers view of Scripture while pointing them to the God of Scripture. However, this book is quite dense so approach it with that understanding. It will not be a good Christian living resource but will greatly resource your Christian living. Most likely, this will become a textbook in colleges due to its density but it is a perfect resource for those who wanting to understand the Scriptures and their self-witness. Your people, your ministry, your preaching, and your own walk will benefit from slowly working through this valuable resource.

Excellent Collection of Essays on Biblical Inerrancy

Ever since the serpent in the Garden of Eden asked Eve, “Hath God said”, Scripture has been under attack. Unfortunately, this attack is not merely coming from outside the walls of Christianity. Increasingly, the questioning of the inerrancy of Scripture in particular has reared its ugly head within the Christian blogosphere, and also within many so-called “Christian books”— written by pastors who claim to preach the gospel. Perhaps more than ever, it is vital for believers to understand why Scripture is the Word of God, why it is the authority in all matters of life, and most importantly, why it can be completely trusted as the foundation for truth. The Scripture Cannot be Broken: Twentieth Century Writings on the Doctrine of Inerrancy edited by John MacArthur is an excellent collection of essays that addresses this vital issue.

Building on the work of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, the essays provided in this timely book look at the historical elements of inerrancy, engage what Scripture has to say about itself, explore the issue of inspiration, outline what inerrancy is all about, concluding with a brief yet important look at biblical infallibility. Each essay is thorough, well-written, biblically rooted, and well worth taking the time to read.

Dr. John MacArthur is a champion of engaging the issue of biblical inerrancy as attested by the recent Inerrancy Summit that was the focus of the 2015 Shepherds Conference. Gathering pastors and church leaders together to discuss biblical inerrancy reveals the continued importance of ensuring the challenges to this all important doctrine are addressed. The Scripture Cannot Be Broken is appropriately edited by Dr. MacArthur and each contributor to this effort does a marvelous job of engaging and outlining in a lucid yet approachable manner why believers should understand what inerrancy is all about and why it is so important to hang our proverbial hat on this doctrine.

I appreciated that the entire spectrum of this doctrine is addressed, notably beginning with the historical basis for this doctrine to include the various controversies that faced theologians throughout the years. One can quickly see that attacks against the inerrancy of Scripture are really nothing new. Challenges to inerrancy will continue to present themselves and the conversations that continue to swirl around a number of topics related to Scripture and the repeated attempts by liberal scholars to diminish the historicity and authority of Scripture will not cease. It is absolutely essential that believers remain cognizant of these attempts and books such as this one perform a valuable function in providing believers with the tools to understand such attacks and the means to combat with historical fact and most importantly from the pages of Scripture itself those who seek to treat Scripture as nothing more than a collection of moral stories.

This is a book I highly recommend to be in the collection of all believers but especially as a resource for pastors and Bible College/Seminary students. Regardless of whether one is a scholar engaging liberal attempts to push against the foundation of biblical inerrancy or whether one is a layman who may run across someone who has questions about this issue, we have to understand and be able to elaborate why God’s Word is inerrant and what that means. The outstanding essays provided in this book will go a long way to informing and empowering the body of Christ to declare that God’s Word is indeed inerrant and how to cogently and powerfully defend the doctrine of inerrancy.

This book is terrible. The editor should be fired. There are a ton of spelling and grammar errors. It was obviously rushed to print to cash in on the popularity of subject.

Mostly stuff you already know

Should've listened to the other review -- this book was definitely rushed. A solid 15-20% of the book is an overview of python and programming in general, another 20-30% covering basic math in tensorflow, and another 30% or so on a high level overview on what machine learning is. Is anyone who would buy a book on TensorFlow in need of an overview of any of these topics? The remainder of the book is dedicated to walking through examples that are readily available through the existing free resources / docs. This book was a cash grab -- don't fall for it.

About the Author
Pete Snustad has served as Dean of Undergraduate Studies at UMN and continues to teach Genetics every year.  He received his Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis.

Michael Simmons is a well-regarded Genetics researcher and very focused teacher.  He ran the intro general biology course at UMN for years and has an excellent feel for content and pedagogy as well as being on top of his field.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

An Outstanding TextBook In Genetics

This is one of the best textbooks that I have seen. First it seems exceptionally complete and does not shy away from being challenging at times. The explanations are clear and precise. It is well illustrated. It's coverage of genetics from basic concepts to advanced concepts is ideal for serious classes in Biology majors who expect to go further. The book also introduces the student to a resource that immensely useful in research: The National Center for Biotechnology Information database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). The book has inspired me to research the subject further.

Not For Musicians!

I had wanted a book maybe titled "Genetics for Dummies", but having found none, I settled for this one. Genetics - granted - is a
VERY difficult subject, and I was hoping this might come just a little close to my hopes. No dice. This a a large, heavy TEXTBOOK on the subject, and it's taking me more than a WEEK (not reading everyday) to just get past the 2 or 3 page introduction..

Very complex subject (of course), and I would presume perfect for those who have a *little* background in basic biology. [Musician don't get biology courses in their degree programs.]

Small font, compact chapters and sub-chapters. I intend to stay with it a little longer, with hope that it will begin to 'clarify' soon. A fairly large book: 11" x 9" x 1-1/2" thick. Well illustrated.

Great book, packed with important and relevant information.

I have an adult sibling with a personality disorder, and I can't tell you how much this book helped me. It's written straightforward, in every day words any of us can understand. From soup (the background information, such as factors that may cause the condition) to nuts (how to cope with someone you love who has a personality disorder), this book is full of what you need to successfully navigate the dangerous lands of the minds and behaviors of people with personalty disorders. I learned two things especially that I will be putting to work soon: that I can do more things on my own to learn about this disease and how to deal with; and two, that my brother really needs counseling and not just medication, which he really hasn't gotten so far.

I wasn't sure whether my co-worker was friendly or downright crazy, but this helped clear things up. Haha not sure if I want to share this book with her but it pretty much word for word describes how moody she is and how she can be happy one minute and on a rampage the next. If you or someone you know is like this, might be worth a read as you can have a better understanding of their situation as it might not technically be their fault.

I used my Kindle Unlimited to read this book and found that this book provided in-depth information into the life of personality disorders. The author provides a in-depth knowledge for the person living with a personality disorder or someone who loves someone with a personality disorder! I walked away with a deeper understanding of this topic!
