Wrong title BUT GREAT book
By Samuel Igwe
The correct title is:

Digital Designing With Programmable Logic Devices

This is possibly the best book I have purchased on this subject.

It contains a thorough coverage of logic design with Finite State Machines. Examples include various

Programmable Logic Devices from PAL16L8 to 10R8 and even ROMS.

Introduction to micro code and CISC. Address Bus Decoding is covered towards the end as well.

All in all a wonderful book - and found just in time given my interest in digital design. I am probably

going to read it a second time, before delving into my own projects.

In short you should come away from this confident enough to purchase a CPLD/FPGA board and

start experimenting.

Required reading for EVERY woman!
By D. Witt
I honestly thought that just being a woman ~ I knew all I needed to know to get pregnant. I am 35 now and ready to have a baby, so I stopped taking the pill and waited 2 cycles and thought all I had to do was plan our night of fun close to Ovulation "Day 14". Was I ever wrong!!
After trying unsuccessfully on my own for 5 months, I started to question my fertility. I purchased ovulation test strips and they wouldn't show a peak ovulation. I found others online who were trying to conceive and recommended this book. Once I received the book, I couldn't put it down! I was amazed at what little information I actually knew about my cycle ~ my own body and what it had been telling me all along. I just didn't understand it.
I learned not everyone ovulates on "Day 14", for me it is actually "Day 23". I assumed I wasn't ovulating and got frustrated at day 20-21 and would stop testing. I now know to look for signals to show when I'm ovulating and now test in the correct window.
By reading this book I now have a clear understanding of my cycle. At my age, I want to have a baby sooner than later, so I plan on taking a more aggressive approach to my fertilization. I talked with my doctor after 6 months, rather than 1 year. With the help of this book and charting, I was able to explain my cycle and show my doctor all my charts. I was able to provide all the information needed to show I have a short luteal phase. By providing this information to the doctor, we will be able to treat the ovulation problem that much quicker. My doctor commented that I was extremely organized and it really helped things along.
This book is very easy to read and understand. You will be able to clearly read your own body signals during your cycle, and have a better understanding of your fertilization ~ whether you want to become pregnant - or not.
I will share this book with other women and would recommend it for every woman!

Review from a Man!
By The Tank
After 7 years of trying and over $35,000.00 out of pocket expenses to fertility doctors, my wife and I pretty much resigned to the fact we couldn't make our own genetic children. We then started the adoption from China process. We paid all that money and are still waiting for our adoption referral date.

While we were waiting for the adoption to go through, I came across this book on Amazon. I figured, what the hell, it's worth a try. I bought the book and read it in three days! I found a couple of excel charts online, and then altered them for our use. I highlighted the most important parts of the book for my wife to read. She said several times, "I never even heard of this stuff!" Even our long time family doctor didn't know most of this info.

We were pregnant after the third month! Yes, after trying for SEVEN years!!! Our beautiful baby boy is now seven months old and the joy of our lives.

GET THIS BOOK! There is HUGE money in keeping us ignorant on fertility.

Good luck!

A happy and proud Dad and Husband!

Brilliantly enlightening!
By A Customer
I bought this book after 4 unsuccessful months of trying, which was after 3 months of waiting after having 2 miscarriages. Since I'd gotten pregnant right away with my first child, I figured there might be something I needed to learn and I couldn't have been more right. This book is an absolute must for anyone, whether you're trying to get pregnant or not. I learned more about my body in the day and a half it took me to read the book than I ever did in any of the sex ed classes in school. After 4 months of what we thought was perfect timing and no success, we thought there might be a problem. I bought the book to learn about detecting ovulation and potential fertility problems. I got pregnant the first cycle I charted because of the knowledge I gained about ovulation and its signals. I learned through charting that I ovulated on Day 21 rather than Day 14. I was also able to determine I was pregnant without even taking a test! I'm so thrilled about the knowledge I've gained by reading this book and I feel much more in tune with my body now that I am pregnant. I urge any woman to get this book if you are at all interested in your body, pregnancy achievement, or pregnancy avoidance. This book is very well written in plain English that is easy to understand. The illustrations, color photographs, and numerous charting patterns were especially helpful to me. I can't say enough about this book!

Lieutenant-Commander Jim Treggaron, pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, had the blood of the old Cornish pirates in his veins - or so his men said. Otherwise, he'd never have tried to organise his Swordfish squadron to operate from a little beach in Greece. They were supposed to fly from their aircraft carrier.
However, Jim found a bunch of tough Resistance helpers, a cave full of old R.A.F. fuel and ammo, and a beach long enough for take-off.
The Italian navy was in handy range so zooming into action went the Sailor With Wings!

A Coalition Rebellion Short Story

What was hidden is now found.

It has been a decade since King Dare and the flashbow warrior Dax reunited to protect their world. The Coalition has been driven out, but they have never given up on regaining the jewel that is Trios, and the battle is ongoing. The constant threat of the Coalition is a heavy load to carry, but it is made easier for King Dare and Dax by the presence of their mates, Queen Shaylah and Califa, and brightened immeasurably by their children, Lyon and Shaina.

At the urging of the queen, the families steal one single day away from the pressure, a day of rest spent at one of the few pristine spots left on their beloved planet, a place full of Dare's family history--a place where they find hope in a treasure thought lost forever, and their children unexpectedly discover what could well be the miracle to keep Trios safe.

A short story bridging older novels to the new. And it’s free!
By ReadingMad100
This short story is not a romance although it does have romantic moments in it. The purpose of this story is to bridge two novels written more than 20 years ago (“Lord of the Storm” and “Skypirate”), to a new novel, “The Rebel Prince” published in 2015. The original stories still read well today and do not feel dated.

For those who read the original novels, this story allows you to experience the thrill of seeing how the couples from each novel is faring years after their happy ever after endings. “The Kingbird” acts as a beautiful epilogue to those stories. It also acts as a refresher/update on those original novels.

“The Kingbird” is written from the point of view of Lord of the Storm’s heroine, Shaylah, and Skypirate’s hero, Dax. It describes a lovely family interlude when the two couples’ children (the future hero and heroine of the 2015 novel “Rebel Prince”) are pre-teens.

This is great if you loved the original novels and want more. If you read this expecting a short story that connects the old novels with the new one, you won’t be disappointed. I found it heartwarming. And it’s free!

Justine Davis writes in a style I enjoy. I am looking forward to reading The Rebel Prince.

Time taken to read:
When I started reading this story, my Kindle App predicted it would take me 30 minutes. As I continued it said it would take me an hour and a half. So I’m guessing most readers will take somewhere in that range.

The bridge in the series.
By Donnie A. Brande
This series is well written and easy to follow. Starting with a slave who is sold to a former officer who runs a facility for the rest and relaxation of coalition officers. The slave, Wolf (Dare), who is a political prisioner, is gifted to a flight officer who doesn't want anything g to do with controlling another human being. Her initial reaction to sent him away, results in the the slave being torchered for failure to please the pilot (Shayla). Seeing the error of her beliefs, she end up falling for this man and the travesty of his life. Everything finally comes full circle when Shayla returns Dare to his home and discovers he is the last survivor of the royal family. Eventually, they bond and produce an heir. Their best friends are a former childhood friend and his bonded mate, who are also parents. Their world is still being threatened by nature, as well as, coalition forces. Ten years after their escape and establishing control of their own people, King Dare and his extended family long for a little "me" time. After determining they deserved this special time, they allowed themselves and their families a true 24-hr R & R.

A great bridge
By Amazon Customer
I have been a fan of this series for nearly ten years. I am so pleased Justine Davis has written this story as a bridge between Dare, Shaylah, Fax, and Califa' stories and the new release. We learn more about the families, the Coalition, and the two children featured in The Rebel Prince, which I can't wait to read.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Alex Delaware and LAPD detective Milo Sturgis investigate the death of Alex’s most mysterious patient to date in the sensational new thriller from the master of suspense, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Kellerman.

At nearly one hundred years old, Thalia Mars is a far cry from the patients that child psychologist Alex Delaware normally treats. But the charming, witty woman convinces Alex to meet with her in a suite at the Aventura, a luxury hotel with a checkered history.

What Thalia wants from Alex are answers to unsettling questions—about guilt, patterns of criminal behavior, victim selection. When Alex asks the reason for her morbid fascination, Thalia promises to tell all during their next session. But when he shows up the following morning, he is met with silence: Thalia is dead in her room.

When questions arise about how Thalia perished, Alex and homicide detective Milo Sturgis must peel back the layers of a fascinating but elusive woman’s life and embark on one of the most baffling investigations either of them has ever experienced. For Thalia Mars is a victim like no other, an enigma who harbored nearly a century of secrets and whose life and death draw those around her into a vortex of violence.

Heartbreak Hotel is classic Delaware and classic Kellerman.

CHAPTER

1

I lead a double life.

Some of my time is spent using the doctorate I earned: evaluating the mental health of injured, neglected, or traumatized children, making recommendations about parental custody, providing short-term treatment. My own childhood was often nightmarish and I like to think I’m making a difference. I keep my fees reasonable and bills get paid.

Then there’s the other stuff, initiated by my best friend, an LAPD homicide lieutenant. Once in a while my name leaks into a news story. Mostly I keep out of public view. I doubt any of the families I see are aware of the murders I work on. They’ve never commented on it and I think they would if they knew.

When my invoices finally make their way through the LAPD bureaucracy, I may get paid at an hourly rate far below my office fee. Sometimes those bills are ignored or rejected outright. If my friend finds out, he makes noise. His success clearing homicides is first-rate. Getting me paid for my time, not so much.

Business-wise, the other stuff doesn’t make much sense. I don’t care.

I enjoy seeing bad people pay.

What began on a Monday morning in early June seemed to have nothing to do with either half of my life.

Go know.

The answering service operator was a new hire named James, with a shaky voice and a way of turning statements into questions that implied self-esteem issues. Either he hadn’t been trained in handling non-emergency calls or he was a poor student.

“Dr. Delaware? I’ve got someone on the line, a Ms. Mars?”

“Don’t know her.”

“That’s her name? Mars? Like the candy bar?”

“Is it urgent?”

“Um . . . I don’t know, Dr. Delaware? She does sound kind of . . . weak?”

“Put her on.”

“You bet, Dr. Delaware? Have a great day?”

A faint voice as dry as leaf dust said, “Good morning, Doctor. This is Thalia Mars.”

“What can I do for you, Ms. Mars?”

“My guess is you don’t do house calls but I’ll supplement your fee if you see me at my home.”

“I’m a child psychologist.”

“Oh, I know that, Dr. Delaware. I’m well aware of the wonderful work you did at Western Pediatric Medical Center. I’m a great fan of the hospital. Ask Dr. Eagle.”

Ruben Eagle worked with Western Peds’ poorest patients as head of outpatient services and was routinely ignored by hospital fundraisers because the day-to-day maladies of the uninsured couldn’t compete for headlines with heart surgery, kidney transplants, and whiz-

bang cellular research.

Had he sent this woman to me as a way of stroking one of the few donors he had? It wasn’t like Ruben to politick without asking me first.

“Dr. Eagle referred you to me?”

“Oh, no, Doctor. I referred myself.”

“Ms. Mars, I’m not clear about what you want—”

“How could you be? I’d explain over the phone but that would take up too much of your valuable time. Once we get together, my check will include whatever charge you decide is appropriate for this call.”

“It’s not a matter of billing, Ms. Mars. If you could give me a basic explanation about what you need—”

“Of course. Your work suggests you’re an analytic and compassionate man and I could use both. I’m not a nut, Dr. Delaware, and you won’t need to travel far. I’m at the Aventura Hotel on Sunset, a short drive from you.”

“You’re visiting L.A.?”

“I live at the Aventura. That’s a bit of a tale, in itself. Would an initial retainer of, say, five thousand dollars set your mind at ease? I’d offer to wire it directly to you but that would require asking for your banking information and you’d suspect some sort of financial scam.”

“Five thousand is far too much and there’s no need for a retainer.”

“Don’t you take retainers when you work for the courts?”

“Sounds as if you’ve researched me, Ms. Mars.”

“I try to be thorough, Doctor, but I promise you there’s nothing ominous at play. The hotel’s a semi-public place and the front desk knows me well. Is there any way you could meet me today, say at three p.m.? You’d avoid rush-hour traffic.”

“What if I told you I had a prior appointment?”

“Then I’d request another time, Doctor. And if that failed, I’d beseech you.” She laughed. “There is an issue of time. I don’t have much of it.”

“You’re ill—”

“Never felt better,” said Thalia Mars. “However, on my next birthday I will be one hundred.”

“I see.”

“If you don’t believe me, when we get together I’ll show you my last active driver’s license. Flunked the test when I turned ninety-five and have depended, since, on the kindness of others and their internal combustion engines.”

My turn to laugh.

“So we’re on for three, Dr. Delaware?”

“All right.”

“Fabulous, you’re analytic, compassionate, and flexible. The front desk will direct you.”

CHAPTER

2

As soon as the line cleared, I phoned the Aventura.

Miss Mars is here. Would you care to be put through?

No, thanks.

My next call was Ruben. At a conference in Memphis. The Internet had nothing to say about Thalia Mars. No surprise, I supposed. She’d lived most of her long life before techno-geeks decided privacy was irrelevant.

I spent the rest of the morning writing reports, broke at one p.m., slapped together a couple of turkey sandwiches and brewed iced tea, brought a tray out to the garden. Pausing by the pond, I tossed pellets to the koi, continued to Robin’s studio.

Two projects occupied her workbench, a gorgeous two-hundred-year-old Italian mandolin restored for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and an electric contraption that resembled a giant garden slug.

The grub-like thing was part cello, part guitar, and dubbed the Alienator by the aging British rocker who’d commissioned it. Forced to learn classical violin as a kid, the invariably drunk Clive Xeno wanted to try his hand at bowing heavy metal. Per his insistence, the instrument was finished in metal-flake auto paint the color of pond sludge. An enamel-tile portrait of Jascha Heifetz protruded below the bridge, showing the maestro looking skeptical.

Robin, hair kerchiefed, wearing a black tee and overalls, was holding the monstrosity up to the skylight and shaking her head.

I said, “The customer’s always right.”

“Whoever coined that never met Clive. Ah, lunch. You’re a mind reader.”

Blanche, our little blond French bulldog, rose from her basket, waddled over, and rubbed her head on my ankle. I put the sandwiches on a table and fetched her a stick of jerky from the treat bag.

Robin gave the slug another look. “Five hundred hours of my life and I end up with this.”

“Think of it as an avant-garde masterpiece.”

“Isn’t ‘avant-garde’ French for ‘weird’?” Washing her hands, she kissed me, tossed a drop cloth over both instruments, untied her hair, and let loose a cascade of auburn ringlets. “This is after I convinced him to tone it down.”

“No more penis-shaped headstock.”

“That and Heifetz doing something gross. How’s your day going?”

“Finished some reports and heading out in a couple.”

“Milo beckoned?”

“I’m going to see a woman who claims to be nearly a hundred and wants to talk.”

“Claims to be? Like she’s only ninety-eight and is being pretentious?”

I laughed. “No reason to doubt her.”

“She introduced herself that way? I’m almost a hundred.”

“She worked it into the conversation.”

“Why not?” she said. “Last that long, you’d want to strut your stuff. My great-aunt Martina lived until ninety-eight and advertised it in every conversation. ‘Canned green beans, anyone? Been eating them for ninety-eight years and I’m still breathing.’ ”

She picked up a sandwich, nibbled, put it down. “Delicious, you’re the perfect man . . . so why would a hundred-year-old chick call you?”

“She didn’t go into details.”

“But you agreed to do a house call?”

“She’s one of Ruben Eagle’s donors.”

“So you do a good deed and get to escape the office. It has been a while since the Big Guy called. I’ve been wondering when it would get to you.”

“I’ve been restless?”

She kissed my nose. “No, darling, but I know you. The crime rate falls, good for society, boring for you.”

She took another bite of sandwich. “A hundred years old, huh? Imagine the things she’s seen.”

When you’ve lived in a city for years, there’s no need to know much about hotels. Robin and I sometimes ate or drank at the Bel-Air and back in my hospital days I’d attended fundraisers at Hiltons and such. My exposure to the Aventura had been driving west on Sunset and passing a directional sign staked at the mouth of an entrance framed by palms. First time for everything.

The opening fed to a cobblestone drive. The palms were overgrown, bordering on unruly. A second sign legislated 5 MPH. Speed bumps placed every twenty feet enforced the rule. Combined with the cobbles, that made for a kidney-thumping crawl.

Beautiful, sunny L.A. day. Isn’t it always? But when eucalyptus joined the vegetative mix, branches dense enough to form a roof created an artificial dusk. Ten spinal concussions in, I reached a fork marked by a clot of massive banana plants. Valet and self-parking to the right, hotel entrance to the left.

I pulled the Seville into a surprisingly shabby asphalt lot boxed on three sides by pale-pink stucco walls and backed by fifty-foot Canary Island pines. Out-of-state plates and rental cars predominated. A couple of golf carts in Reserved slots. No valets in sight.

I parked, walked for a while, finally arrived at a structure that might’ve been designed by Clive Xeno during a bender: two stories of tile-roofed hacienda in the same pallid pink, attached to a four-story steel-and-bronze glass cylinder.

Cracks had formed in the older building’s stucco where it merged with the tower. Spanish Colonial mama struggling to birth a giant alien baby.

The only indication of the hotel’s identity was a rusty iron A above glass doors centering the newer addition. When I was two steps away, the panels hissed open, creating a maw that led to a three-story atrium—a tube within a tube. Background music was a brain-eroding electronic mantra flicked with random bird peeps. The ceiling was matte black embedded with starry-night LED bulbs. What might have been actual constellations, but I’m no astronomer.

To the right, thirty-plus feet of waterfall trickled down a pebbly glass wall. A scatter of leather deco-revival chairs dyed a strange liverish red were sided by chunks of resin pretending to be boulders. Empty chairs but for a hipster couple in their thirties facing each other as they worked separate iPhones. A girl around five stood near the woman, limp doll in her hand, thumb in her mouth.

Ranchero Revival meets Missile Silo meets twenties Paris meets Fred Flintstone via Beijing.

With an overhead tribute to the Griffith Park planetarium.

Maybe dealing with that on a daily basis helped a hundred-year-old brain stay in shape.

To the left, a pair of chrome elevators preceded glass doors leading to the older wing. At the center, Reception and Concierge shared a poured-concrete counter. Three pallid, ponytailed people in their twenties were on duty, a woman and two men, each the same five-six or so and wearing Asian-style tunics colored the hepatic hue of the chairs.

No name tags, no notice of my approach as thirty fingers continued to tap laptops.

When I reached the counter, one of the men smiled with astonishing warmth while continuing to type. “May I help you?”

“I’m here to see Ms. Mars.”

“Thalia,” said the woman. Now three wan faces found me fascinating.

“We love Thalia,” said the other man.

The woman said, “You’re her doctor. She said to send you right over.”

“She’s in Bungalow Uno,” said the first man.

The woman eyed the glass doors. “If you go through there, you’ll be in El O-ree-hee-nal. Just keep going and go outside and you’ll see a sign leading to The Green.”

I said, “O-ree—”

The first man said, “Ori-hi-naaal. Spanish for ‘original.’ ”

Second said, “What’s left of the old hotel. The Aventura believes in preservation and synthesis.”

The woman said, “Uno’s the last bungalow.”

First said, “We love Thalia.”

On the other side of the glass was a rose-carpeted hallway lined with numbered oak doors. The first few rooms had been converted to computerized card-slot entry. The rest retained heavy cast-bronze knobs and keyholes.

Partially ori-hi-naaal.

The corridor emptied to an echoing loggia that led outdoors. The air smelled like freshly cut grass. The Green was a wide stone path swathing through more palms, plus ferns and bromeliads. Like the entry drive, dimmed by overgrowth.

The first bungalow appeared fifty feet in, white clapboard, tar-roofed, swaddled in green. A sign over the door read Ocho: 8. The countdown continued with a series of identical structures through Dos: 2.

Then, a traipse through jungle until a larger building backed by a high pink wall slipped into view.

Uno: 1 was set on a raised foundation with three steps leading to a screened porch. A roof pitched higher, a brick chimney, and black shutters set it apart from the other bungalows. Paint flaked from boards, the roof was patched with tar where shingles had come loose.

Once upon a time, the VIP suite?

The location afforded privacy, the high wall security. But the distance from the parking lot would mean a serious hike for an older person. Maybe Thalia Mars was one of those super-specimens.

The porch door was open. As I climbed the steps, the arid voice I’d heard over the phone said, “Dr. Delaware! Who knew you’d be so handsome?”

Eighty or so pounds of vintage humanity in a Ming-blue dress sat in a rattan peacock chair and smiled up at me. The chair looked identical to the throne Sydney Greenstreet had occupied in Casablanca. The actor had been four times that weight and overflowed the cane. The current occupant evoked a toddler playing grown-up.

“Ms. Mars.” I extended my hand and received a quick, firm shake by fingers that felt like chopsticks. A ring set with a huge amethyst collided with my knuckles.

Thalia Mars’s wide amused mouth was augmented by meticulously applied coral lipstick. Her eyes were clear brown. Shoulder-length hair tinted the ivory of old piano keys had been whipped into a meringue of waves. Nearly a century of gravity had done its inevitable thing with her jawline, but a dagger-thin face below the cloud of hair retained enough integrity to suggest a once-firm chin and prominent cheekbones.

An enjoyable book in the Alex Delaware series for fans familiar with the characters
By Sandy Kay
This book is, if I am counting correctly, the 32nd book in the Alex Delaware series. I have read most, if not all of them (after all this time it's a little hard to keep track of them all). This book assumes that the reader is extremely familiar with the main characters -- Milo Sturgis, Alex Delaware, and Alex's girlfriend Robin Castagna. There is very little background on the characters, and how Milo and Alex started working together, what Alex's professional background is, what Milo's relationship is, or what Robin does for a living. If you don't already know this before starting the book, you won't learn much of it by reading this book. As a long-time reader of the series, I am glad the author doesn't spend a lot of the book catching new readers up with the characters. But for this reason, it is important to have read at least some of the earlier books in the series before reading this book or you will miss a lot of subtext.

I enjoy this series and these characters so I am inclined to enjoy the books in the series. This was not my favorite book in the series, but it kept my attention the entire way through and the farther I read in the book, the more I liked the story. The pace was a little slower, especially at the beginning, than in many of the books. Unlike most of the others, Milo doesn't initiate the action in this book with a murder case for Alex to consult on. Alex has a meeting with an older patient (odd because he is a child psychologist), which leads to him calling Milo in to investigate. And unlike some of the other books in the series, there is more methodical investigating (i.e. mystery) and less chasing around being in danger (i.e. thriller). I enjoyed watching the investigation unfold as Milo and Alex pursue various leads to learn who killed the victim.

It is nice to know that after so many books in the series, the author can still write a story that keeps my attention and makes for an enjoyable mystery.

If you are a fan of the series, I think this is a book you will enjoy.

Every Reliable

Kellerman has again written a highly entertaining, well written tale based on the interactions between his usual protagonists. Is it great literature? Of course not, but it's a fun read, an excellent story, with plenty of evolving twists and turns, and an excellent way to spend a couple of hours.

The Child Psychologist and the Centenarian.
By H. A. Friedman
Many times you read a book from a long series and find yourself disappointed because for whatever reason, the author has decided to make some major changes in his plotting and instead of finding an old friend you find a stranger. This was not the case in the latest Alex Delaware novel. It is a bit different in several ways; the subject is not the usual child (he is a child psychologist), it is a nearly 100-year old woman. Milo does not carry the story with Alex just tagging along. Because Alex was in at the start he takes a greater part in the actual detecting. Most interesting, we never meet the villains. Usually at some point they would show up and say this or do that. In this story they are saved for practically the final page. You know they are just awful people and tend not to leave many loose threads hanging, but there is never a point where you can say with certainty that this person or that person did it. How do I know I loved this book? Usually I go slowly, hit points that I find annoying or illogical and stop reading for a few days. This one I went right through. It was a pleasure to read and you care about the victim who is very different and we and Alex no nothing about. Who is she? Where did her wealth come from? It was just fun to read. A very pleasant surprise.

Einstein's Lost Key: How We Overlooked the Best Idea of the 20th Century, by Alexander Unzicker

One hundred years after the completion of the General Theory of Relativity, conferences, meetings, and celebrations are taking place all around the world. Yet a decisive consideration on the subject by Albert Einstein has completely fallen into oblivion. Already in 1911, he held the key to an even greater discovery in his hands: a theory concerning the variable speed of light that would have explained the origin of gravity by referring to distant masses in the universe. Eventually, the consequences for modern cosmology would be revolutionary: the picture of an expanding universe and the Big Bang would need to be revised. Sadly, Einstein's ingenious idea came twenty years too early. For it took until the 1930s before the true size of the universe was revealed, which would have confirmed his formula about the variable speed of light. Due to a series of accidents, the theory remained practically unknown, although the Nobelists Erwin Schrdinger and Paul Dirac had worked on similar ideas. Einstein's Lost Key is a description of relativity comprehensible for lay people, a vividly exposed history of science, and a serious, though controversial input for modern research. Dr. Alexander Unzicker is a German physicist and award-winning science writer. His books Bankrupting Physics and The Higgs Fake have generated controversy in the physics community. With Einstein’s Lost Key, Unzicker gives an account of his long-lasting pursuit of Einstein's ideas.

Interesting conjecture
By Russell Bagdoo
In Einstein’s lost key, the author explains how modern physics can do to recover the quest for uncovering the true secret of nature. He considers worthwhile to excavate old ideas that existed before modern physics became lost at sea. He claims that around 1911, Einstein held the key to a theory concerning the variable speed of light that would have explained the origin of gravity by referring to distant masses of the universe. He writes that not only Einstein’s ingenious idea needs to be re-evaluated, but also other profound ideas from Mach, Dirac, Schrdinger, Sciama and Dicke, that are closely related to it. He conceives that Dicke gave Einstein’s formula a revolutionary meaning by recognizing that the theory of variable speed of light describes the solar system as well as the conventional formulation, but leads to a different cosmology where there is a Big Bang without expansion of the universe, only light spreads out, nothing else. I agree with this combination of ideas that could fit together like a puzzle and could revolutionize our current understanding of the universe, but I disagree with Dicke cosmology.

I have not necessarily the same opinion as this informed author on every argument but I recognize with him that contemporary physics is in the midst of a crisis, that there is a large dismissal of modern theoretical physicists in profit of a struggle for power and money among high priests of the mainstream. In his other books Bankrupting Physics and The Higgs Fake, A. Unzicker has described in detail how the method of finding laws of nature through excessive calculations has nothing to do with reality and facts. He has captured the frustrations of physicists while laying out a provocative plea for a reality check in modern meta-fancies such as string theory, cosmic inflation and multiverses. Einstein’s lost key, by exposing an overlap of ideas of prominent physicists which made well-grounded science, is also a plea for physical reality. I like very much this book about cosmology.

Arrogance + horrible style + lack of substance + mistakes + lack of coherent argumentation + a bunch of formulae, thrown at the reader, unrelated and out of context + a bunch of baseless opinions... Would make relativity physicists turn in their graves, at high speed.

Save your money for a good book on relativity if you are interested in that thrilling subject ( see my comment on Einstein's "The principle of relativity")

Negative Binomial Regression, by Joseph M. Hilbe

At last - a book devoted to the negative binomial model and its many variations. Every model currently offered in commercial statistical software packages is discussed in detail - how each is derived, how each resolves a distributional problem, and numerous examples of their application. Many have never before been thoroughly examined in a text on count response models: the canonical negative binomial; the NB-P model, where the negative binomial exponent is itself parameterized; and negative binomial mixed models. As the models address violations of the distributional assumptions of the basic Poisson model, identifying and handling overdispersion is a unifying theme. For practising researchers and statisticians who need to update their knowledge of Poisson and negative binomial models, the book provides a comprehensive overview of estimating methods and algorithms used to model counts, as well as specific guidelines on modeling strategy and how each model can be analyzed to access goodness-of-fit.

Review
"The test is well-written, easy-to-read but once started, is difficult to put down as each chapter unfolds the intracacies of the distribution."
C.M. O'Brien, International Statistical Review

"A good starting point for those who are not familiar with this topic... I would recommend this book to researchers and students who would like to gain an overview of the negative binomial distribution and its extensions."
Fiona McElduff, University College, London

A very thorough and clearly written reference on negative binomial regression.
By Hanjoo Kim
"Negative Binomial Regression" is an excellent reference for any statisticians, practitioners and students who are working and/or interested in the subject. I highly recommend this book. There are numerous features and strengths. Here I summarize some important ones as follow:

1. This book is very through in the topic of negative binomial regression which makes it an invaluable source for both researchers and practitioners.
2. As with other books written by Hilbe, e.g. Generalized Estimating Equations, this book is also very clearly written, easy-to-read and understand with minimal background in elementary maximum likelihood theory and calculus.
3. This book focuses on application of various NB models, but it contains enough mathematical details to show proper elements in the derivation of each model explained.
4. The book does an excellent job in describing almost all the practical encounters of when to use and what to use NB regression models.
5. Most of the programs used in this book are in either Stata, or user written program, called "ado" files that are readily downloadable from the website.

Hilbe discusses the derivation of the model from 2 perspectives - as a Poisson-gamma mixture model, and, with the heterogeneity parameter set as a constant, as a full member of the exponential family of distributions. As such the NB, actually the NB-2, model is a member of the family of generalized linear models, and is now found in most all GLM software implications.

The book discusses most every NB parameterization conceived, and provides details and examples of every commercial NB software application, including NB longitudinal and mixed models. It is clearly written, yet covers details mostly unavailable in other texts.

I think that an overview of content would be very helpful. Here I provide the book content in detail:

comprehensive but with confusing notation
By CA hiker
This book is a comprehensive description of when and how to apply negative binomial statistical models to count data. Through many examples using the Stata statistics system, the book addresses common practical issues such as censored data and excessive numbers of zero counts. Especially useful is chapter four's discussion of overdispersion in statistical models, which identifies negative binomial regression as one among several approaches to this problem.

This book is a good reference for readers already familiar with count models such as Poisson regression, but others will find the book challenging. For example, much of the discussion assumes familiarity with generalized linear modeling (GLM) concepts, such as link functions and exponential families. These concepts are used intensively throughout chapter two but not described until section 2.3, and then only tersely. The book would be much more accessible if section 2.3 summarized the GLM concepts and modeling notation used later in the book, and was placed at the beginning of the chapter. Moreover, the notation is unnecessarily confusing. In particular, there's no clear indication of which variables correspond to scalars, vectors of observations or model parameters, or matrices. The ranges of indices in sums are often unstated, e.g., whether they range over the data observations, the explanatory variables or the model parameters. Many equations have a confusing mix of traditional mathematical and programming language notation, including the summaries of the models in the appendices. Adding to readers' difficulties are numerous typos throughout the text (even in the corrected printing of 2008). This lack of proofreading is below the standards of other technical publications from Cambridge University Press. These notation issues and the typos are minor, but potentially confusing to non-expert readers who may not easily figure out what the author really meant.

The word "earlier" and "previously" are overly used in the text
By Academic Book Reviewer
This review is only focused on the inexact reference style of the text and various other issues mentioned below(2nd edition). These problems hinders me to understand more technical details that addressed in the book. Only after the authors fix these inexact references, I'll be able to understand the book better to have a more comprehensive review on the book.

I found the word "earlier" and "previously" (or "previous") overly used in the books. According to my count, there are over 10 "earlier"s and about 30 "previously"s (or "previous"es). For example,

1. As seen earlier, an individual or observation level format may be converted to grouped format by using code similar to the following: (page 120)

2. This topic, with graphs, was discussed earlier. (page 167)

3. As previously mentioned, GLIM was the first commercial software implementation of GLM. (page 20)

4. Additionally, as previously discussed, both Poisson and negative binomial models can themselves be extended to address the specific reasons why overdispersion arises in the data. (page 74)

5. As previously discussed, two foremost methods used to accommodate Poisson overdispersion are post-hoc scaling and application of a modified variance estimator. (page 110)

In addition, when a book is referred it is better to refer the section number as well.

1. However, as discussed in Cameron and Trivedi (1998) these models are not appropriate for count response models. (page 191)

Some implicit references like the following should also be spelled out so that reader can see where they were first discussed.

1. I have indicated that extended negative binomial models are generally developed to solve either a distributional or variance problem arising in the base NB-2 model. (page 160)

2. I shall use the well-known ships data set that was used in McCullagh and NeIder (1989). (page 200)

For reference to equation, it should specify equation number.

1. Note the similarity to that of the standard Poisson log-likelihood function defined in Chapter 3 as ... (page 200)

These inexact references can take readers who are not familiar with the text yet a lot of time to figure out where "earlier" or "previously" the author actually refers. Since the author read reviews on Amazon, I'd suggest the author post on the book website a table (could be in the errata) of explicit references (e.g., by giving page numbers, section numbers, or equation numbers) these inexact references refer to.

This would be a relative easy task for the author (I'd estimate 1-2 hour work, by searching the word "earlier", "previously", "previous" book referencs in the digital text and writing up the table) but could help an average reader a lot.

Also the terminology seems not very consistent in some places. I found "bootstrapped standard errors" (page 198), "bootstrapping of standard errors" (page 5) and "boostrap standard error" (section 4.3.4 title).

Some acronyms appear before the whole words are spelled out. For example, GEE on page 3.

Typo:
Eq (10.2) L(x beta_i; y_i) should be L(beta_i; y_i) (page 199), so does the equation right on the next page (page 200)
Also Eq(10.2), X_ik should be x_ik.
The index of the second sum sign in Eq (10.2) should be at the bottom.

The first entry in the reference (as shown below) is not unpublished. It is published as Sociological Methodology Volume 32, Issue 1, pages 247-265, 2002
Allison, P. D. and R. Waterman (2002). Fixed-effects negative binomial regression models, unpublished manuscript

Although there are already many typos been corrected in the errata, I think that a professional editor should be hired to work on the text a bit more.
