Before you read the works of Chardin, read this!

This is a fine introduction to the prolific life and writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the most important theologian of the 20th century. Chardin's theology, banned for years by the Vatican, was at least a hundred years ahead of it's time. A geologist, palenthologist, mystic, spiritual lover, he proposed that Darwin's theories of evolution were not contrary to God's revelation but actually was Revelation.
King's book does a good job of detailing Chardin's life, his passions, his pursuits, his beliefs and his science. Though dry and slow at times, the author does help to illuminate the theology of someone who isn't easy to read. Though he lived a rich life, Chardin's writing can be somewhat cold and too scientific at times for the layreader to understand. This book, however, is good solid primer and should be the starting point for anyone interested in a man ahead of his time.

The Universe And Mankind Are Both Evolving Towards Perfection

Ursula King's biography of Teihard de Chardin is a fascinating book written in a style which makes a difficult subject seem quite understandable. King weaves the story of Teihard's life around snapshots of his constantly maturing vision of God, the universe and mankind.

Known for his original concepts such as the ongoing evolution of both the universe and mankind towards perfection and the existence of a global network of self-awareness, Teihard was always regarded as a loose canon by the Vatican. Consequently, not much of his work was released during his lifetime except for those relatively few items which were privately published and distributed among a circle of his friends. Since his death in 1955 all his books and essays have been made available to the general public. Teihard nurtured close, supportive relationships with a small number of caring females and left many letters which reveal the importance of these women in his life.

Although at times he is difficult to comprehend, there is no doubt that Teihard ranks as one of the most prominent thinkers of the twentieth century. The fact that he is recognized as a famous and respected scientist as well as a mystic, greatly increases his significance.

Excellent Introduction to a Life

Fr. Chardin is someone who has touched my heart deeply from the time I first heard about him many years ago. I was fascinated by the few things I heard about his philosophy and theology. I also hear a lot of new-age citations of him that sound like foolishness. His only work that I read with understanding was "Mass on the World." This short piece was a window into a beautiful soul. Ms. King's work is a sweeping and breathtaking panorama of his life and thought. Her observations are well documented with quotes and pictures of his life and works. I am particularly impressed with how she honors his fidelity to the church's magisterium and his vows.
I read this book in three segments. I had to pause to absorb the magnitude of what I read and experienced. The first part was his early life ending with his service in WWI. I remain astounded at his bravery and his complete experience of all the most horrible battles of that war. I do wish the author had made clearer what bored him about the study of Thomas Aquinas. Was he reading poor presentations of Thomas' thought or what problem did he see in Thomas. At his time in Fr. Chardin's life, Thomas was being resurrected by fellow jesuits, one of them, Henri de Lubac, was a close friend. Also J. Maritan and E. Gilson were active. The second segment was his life's work and exile to China. I remain amazed at the energy he gave to science and writing. A powerful mind was at work to make sense of what he learned. I was exhaused reading of his exploits. The third segment was his closing years and his infirmimity. This was a prayerful reading. I was especially touched by his words to a friend, "I always feel God's presence now." The only shortfall I'm seeing in Fr. Chardin's life work is how to get where he saw the need to go. How to learn how I can best make Christ present. Too many new-agers have co-opted Fr. Chardin to make us think we can pull ourselves up by the bootstraps to evolve to the next age. All evolution is in God's Providence.
This book really brought Fr. Chardin to life and helped me understand his meaning and message. Another title that brought Fr. Chardin to life is "For the Time Being" by Annie Dillard. Read and Enjoy.

About the Author
Dr. Roland A. Carlstedt is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Board Certified Sport Psychologist and Chairman of the American Board of Sport Psychology. He also is the holder of an Applied Psychologist's license. Roland earned his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Psychology with Honors from Saybrook Graduate School (with emphases in health and sport psychology and psychophysiology) in San Francisco. He has completed post-doctoral continuing education in Psychiatric Neuroscience through Harvard Medical School and received training in the joint Massachusetts General Hospital-Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Harvard Medical School Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging Functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery (fMRI) Visiting Fellowship program. Roland is also a Research Fellow in Applied Neuroscience with the Brain Resource Company. Roland's dissertation on neuropsychological, personality and performance processes in highly skilled athletes (700) from 7 sports (tennis, baseball, softball, basketball, golf, volleyball, and track and field) was the recipient of the American Psychological Association's Division 47 (Exercise and Sport Psychology) 2001 Award for Best Dissertation in Sport Psychology. Excellent for "what to do" and review

I found this pocket sized book indispensible for ER rotations since it gives you a USEFUL concise one page review of commonly encountered emergencies. Each diagnosis goes through etiology, presentation, physical exam, differential, recommended imaging/labs and disposition options. Use this as a memory aid if you are a resident and as a med student to look like a star! Granted Tintanelli is way more expansive and detailed, but not as portable. I do NOT recommend this as your sole option during a rotation for learning the theory and details behind everything because it will tell you what to do without alot of why. ALSO, KEEP IN MIND the latest edition is from 2002! The basics don't change much, but I would still love to see a new edition!

A nice compact book for med students and interns in ER

Hi, I am one of the medicine residents. I met this book in my intern year. This book is extremely compact and easy to go through. Even in middle of the ER rotation, we can check "what kind of order I should get??", "What's the treatment??", "What's the key history and PEx??". Even though I kinda used to work in ER already, I try to carry this book since I am not working in ER all the time. This is the "best reminder" for me when I see patients who has any problems outside of internal medicine (I think I know internal medicine...)

Sizzling hot and danger!

Laird Campbell's son Tristan is being held prisoner in the north wing of the castle. Muira, as well as the rest of the villagers have presumed him dead for a decade. Muira follows the old man to the north wing and gets claimed by Tristan for his own. He will ask Muira to get something for him that will put her life in danger. Fantastic, can't wait for the next book!

Secrets of the castle.

After her father's death and no money coming in, Muria set out to work at the castle to help her family. Once at the castle, she hears rumors about the laird's only son. Some say he is dead and some say he is alive, but to stay away from the north wing of the castle.
One night when everyone was a sleep, Muria hears noises coming from the kitchen. She then follows a very strange old man to the north wing of the castle. There she meets the lairds son.
This is a fast reading and very enjoyable book to read and it leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for book two.

What mystery is Tristan hiding from Muira? Muira is falling further and further down the rabbit hole with her deep rooted passion for the young Laird. With his helper Muria is able to release Tristan from a magical barrier? Is is enough? Will the beast rise within him? How does Muira play into this world of mystery. I too am falling into the world of magic. I have been riding on the edge of my seat waiting for the next bite! I love the passion and exotic mystery that Tristan embodies. I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for these two lovers.

Die Behistun-Inschrift hat ihren Namen von dem Ort Besutun (Behistan) im Iran, wo K�nig Darius I. (522-486 v. Chr.) eine Abbildung von sich in ein Felsmassiv einmei�eln lie�. Dazu lie� Dareios eine dreisprachige Tafel, in den Sprachen altpersisch, elamisch und babylonisch unter dem Relief anbringen. Da viele Reisende an eben dieser Stelle vorbeigekommen sein sollen war es der ideale Standort f�r Dareios seine milit�rischen Siege zu verewigen und zur Schau zu stellen. Die Inschrift erz�hlt wie der h�chste Gott der Perser, Ahura Masda, Dareios auserw�hlt um �ber Persien zu herrschen und wie er zahlreiche Revolten niederschl�gt und seine Feinde besiegt.
Das Relief zeigt Darieos mit zwei seiner Diener, der eine tr�gt eine Lanze der andere einen Bogen. Dareios schaut auf neun, vor ihm in einer Reihe stehende und offenbar gefesselte, Personen und steht mit seinem Fu� auf einer zehnten, liegenden Person. �ber der gesamten Szene schwebt die Gottheit Ahura Masda. Unter dieser Szene befindet sich eine Inschrift in altpersisch die sich �ber vier Spalten erstreckt und die Geschichte von Dareios Eroberung erz�hlt. Die gleiche Geschichte wird in zwei weiteren Inschriften auf babylonisch und elamisch erz�hlt.

Motivating and Useful

John MacArthur's Rediscovering Expository Preaching was a very good book. It presents insights into preaching that are valuable to both the prospective preacher and to the non-preacher. I've found it interesting to listen to sermons after reading the book. Just as you enjoy and get more out of a sporting event when you understand the game, I believe that I am a better listener to sermons as a result of reading the book. I can better appreciate the effort put in by the preacher to try to make his message clear to the listeners. I can also use the knowledge I've gained by reading to book to more easily pull the key points out of the message. In addition to being a better listener, I feel that I am better prepared to evaluate other churches if we ever find ourselves in a situation, such as moving, where we have to look for a church. I am now in a better position to evaluate the quality of the preaching based on understanding the fundamentals of sound expository preaching.
Rediscovering Expository Preaching presented the historical and theological basis for expository preaching. A commitment to the inerrancy and sufficiency of scripture is one of the key motivators for the use of an expository approach to preaching. It was interesting to learn what expository preaching is not. It was also interesting to learn of the various benefits of preaching expositionally, most importantly being forced to deal with the whole of scripture.
Rediscovering Expository Preaching was also motivating. It made me want to be used of God through the preaching of His Word, if it is His will. I want to work hard to understand the Bible and be bold enough to proclaim it faithfully whether it is in season or not. The book presented both the responsibility and the privilege associated with preaching God's word. It is clearly not something to be taken lightly. Preaching is done in the presence of God and for His glory. There is no more serious business.
Rediscovering Expository Preaching also presents tips, techniques, and methods for studying the Bible, preparing your sermon, and finally presenting it. The information was easily accessible and practical. It will not be hard to put the methods taught in the book into practice.

Expository Preaching 101

Though I am not a preacher, I decided to read Rediscovering Expository Preaching in an attempt to discover exactly what expository preaching is and compare it to the type of teaching practiced in most modern churches. That this book was written by John MacArthur and the faculty of Master's seminary is a strong endorsement of its value, for that institution is known as being one that upholds the value of expositional teaching. I hoped also that I would learn some techniques and disciplines that would enrich my personal Bible study as well as my writing. I was not disappointed.

Effective exposition of the Bible requires four steps and each of these receives careful analysis in this book. The steps are:

-Personal preparation. This involves ensuring that the expositor is walking with the Lord. He must be dedicated to studying the Word and to prayer as well as other spiritual disciplines. Proper exposition cannot be done apart from the Spirit who alone can illumine the text.

-Processing the Biblical text. This involves using study tools, engaging in hermeneutics and exegesis and generally drawing the meaning from the text in a biblical manner.

-Pulling the message together. This involves determining the central ideas of a text and drawing up an outline. It involves an effective introduction and conclusion and moving from exegesis to exposition.

-Preaching the exposition. This involves actually delivering the message in an effective manner.

Each of these steps is explained in sufficient, though not burdensome detail. Nine authors combined to write the nineteen chapters, and while some are more effective communicators than others, each does a good job of handling his topic.

While this book is clearly aimed at the aspiring pastor or to pastors who are attempting to make their messages expository, there is still value in reading it for people who are not pastors. Many of the principles of hermeneutics and exegesis are important for all believers to understand thoroughly in order to effectively interpret and apply the Word of God. While not all of the information will pertain to these readers, those parts can be passed over without losing the value of the book.

I recommend this book for the targeted audience (pastors and aspiring pastors) but also for lay people who are interested in learning Biblical methods of hermeneutics and exegesis. That being said, there are other options that may be better-suited for these people, such as How To Interpret the Bible For Yourself by Richard Mayhue.

Drazen Petrovic died young, the victim of a devastating car accident on a wet German road in 1993. His influence on European and American basketball, however, remains strong even today.

A Croatian national, Petrovic was a legend in his own country, turning professional at fifteen and joining the Yugoslav national team as a teenager. His flashy, provocative style made him beloved by fans and despised by his rivals. He could have had a long and distinguished career in his homeland, but Petrovic wanted more.

One of the first Europeans to break into the American National Basketball Association, Petrovic battled against xenophobia and the long-held belief that Europeans could not attain stardom in the world’s best league. After initial difficulty in Portland, his contributions to the New Jersey Nets breathed life into a dormant franchise and made him an NBA star.

As Yugoslav forces invaded Croatia, Petrovic’s success was a matter of pride, comfort, and inspiration in his homeland—and a source of conflicted emotions for the young man as his friends and family faced the dangers of war.

Written by basketball writer Todd Spehr, Drazen is a tribute to the determination and spirit Petrovic brought to every aspect of his short, brilliant life.

About the Author

Much like Drazen Petrovic, Australian Todd Spehr left his homeland to pursue a basketball career in the United States. After a successful collegiate playing career, by age twenty-five he was coaching at his alma mater and covering professional basketball as a writer.

Spehr graduated from Central Christian College in Kansas in 2006. His writing appears in both international and US basketball publications and prominent websites, including ESPN and SLAM. He currently resides in Australia with his wife, Yolanda. Drazen is his first book.

Incredibly detailed insight into the life of this amazing sports man

Incredibly detailed insight into the life of this amazing sports man. Really well researched, the author has clearly spent a long time to ensure this book becomes the authortative literary piece on Dražen's life.
only improvement could be use of Dražen's native alphapet throughout the book so that, for example, he is 'Dražen Petrović' not Drazen Petrovic...and 'pujac tricu' (shoot for three) is 'pucaj tricu'.

Simply amazing. Great job by the author , he made a really deep research and put a lot of work to this book and it payed off. Should be mandatory reading for every basketball player specially from Europe. There is no better role model than Drazen Petrovic.

Fantastic book about the best basketball player ever to come out of Europe. Croatia's hero and idol was taken way, way too early from us. Spehr's eloquent style lends itself perfectly to a great story.
