About the Author
Kathy Najafi holds an MAELT (Masters in English Language Teaching) from Reading University, London, U.K. She has extensive ESL/EFL teaching experience in the United Arab Emirates, Iran and the United States. Besides teaching all English subject areas, Kathy is a published author, editor, translator and curriculum developer. She is the author of numerous VESL manuals for Houston Community College and Lone Star College. Ms. Najafi is also creator, co-producer and host of HCCTV's 'Bridging Cultures'. A past president of TexTESOL IV, Kathy also enjoys presenting on Cross-Cultural Awareness / Intercultural Communication. She is currently a professor in the Intensive English Department at Houston Community College.

Cynthia Fettig has extensive teaching and training experience in the English Language Teaching field. She is also an experienced writer, editor, and curriculum designer. This book was received as promised, in a timely manner and in very good condition. Although the packaging was damaged, the book was not damaged at all and was received in it's practically new condition.

A Lesson Well Earned

Do you know people who tease, do they tease you? How does it make you feel?

The author, Leela Hope, has written a lovely story about Ernie and Henry the elephants and their friends. Ernie the elephant was a nice elephant, he was a small elephant,mbut he made up for it in his kindness. On the other hand, Henry was a pain in the neck. He was always boasting that the was the best, the best at everything. In fact he was such a boaster, his other friends got tired of him, and they would not play games with him. One day, Henry asked Ernie to race with him. Henry said he was sure to win. Ernie saud he would, indeed, race with him, but if he won, he could no longer boast to all their friends. Ernie had a plan. When you read this book you will see who won the race, and what plan Ernie had.

Parents/teachers will enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will be able to talk about friends that boast and tend to bully, and make suggestions that might make it easier for everyone. Children do not know how to help their friends who are being bullied, and this is a good time to discuss what is happening and what to do. There are several pluses in this book, one: the book is written in rhyme, and everyone enjoys reading in rhyme. Two: there are lessons to be learned, and this is an excellent manner in which children learn. The illustrations are bright, colorful and vivid. They depict the adventures of Henry and Ernie. I liked this book because of the writing particularly for children, and the lessons learned. Note: a complimentary copy of this book was provided to read and review.

`Henry was now getting teased, And his comebacks were not snappy.'

San Diego, California Author Leela Hope studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. And it is there that her star shines brightest. Always finding something unique on which to base her stories, she makes each tale a learning experience for children as well as offering some pointers for parenting!

Two different elephants who couldn't be more different! Ernie the elephant is small but has a big heart. Henry the elephant is a pompous braggart and tease. When Henry plays at school he pulls ticks and brags about he is the best. But ne day Henry is running track and trips when all the others go away. He asks Ernie to race him, knowing and bragging that he will win. Ernie agrees to race him and if Ernie wins he makes Henry promise he will no longer tease others. Henry boastfully agrees. The race is on: Henry runs faster but tires, while Ernie starts slower but saves his energy to the end and Ernie is the final winner. The others al cheer that Ernie is the winner, and Henry is teased. He's learned his lesson and asks Ernie for forgiveness. Alls well that ends well!

The fun story teaches some fine lessons about being thoughtful, courteous and not bragging but always sharing. Another little winner from Leela. Grady Harp, May 15

How Henry changed from being a bragger!

I enjoyed this ebook and found it has a very good moral in it for children and up. It tells how it felt for Henry when he lost a race with Ernie and how before the race Ernie after being asked to race against Henry made him promise not to be bragging anymore if he won. Who do you think won? I would recommend this book above all to young kids but not just young kids but those older too who have not yet learned this lesson. I feel that this ebook belongs in the five star ratings because not only does it have great colorful illustrations but also has a very good moral in this story. I received this ebook for free and now in return have given it an honest review. Super work Leela! By Angela

startling, poignant, bold

Stefanie Freele belongs to a fascinating company of women writers in contemporary American literature tackling the short story and taking it to new and important places. Like Elizabeth Crane and Stacey Levine (who are building on the work of Aimee Bender), Freele addresses the strange in the every day, and bends the form of the short story, forcing it to contain the surreal, the angry, the maternal, the feminine and the immediate. The most powerful stories for me are the most specific; headliners include "Boots" and "Over the Rolling Waters we go." Other favorites are the lyrically strange pieces that ask what a story is, and invite us to consider what it can be. "Tiny Toasts served with an insufficient amount of Brie" would certainly please Flannery O'Connor, but it would also delight Baudelaire and Tristan Tzara. Smart, and sneakily intellectual, Surrounded by Water is a turbulent, intriguing ride.

Don't Miss this Collection!!

Surrounded by Water by Stefanie Freele.

Stefanie Freele’s collection, Surrounded by Water, contains stories with strong, often lyrical, language and believable, down-to-earth characters, each piece, a reading experience. It’s her women I am drawn to. They’re tough. In “Over the Rolling Waters Go,” the creeping reality of a wife and mother is juxtaposed against the peppy gung-ho spirit of her husband and his idea of family dynamic. What seems at first blush to be an innocent virtue turns out to be bullying very quickly. The suspense builds and…I won’t talk about the ending.

Another mother, in the short but totally satisfying, “If the Unsuitable Neighbor Smells Snow,” shows her own fierce determination.
“A Bunch of Cash Landed my Way” brings us humorous wishful thinking and “The Problem of Pillows” illustrates Ms. Freele’s deft touch at dialogue. For example, when a student runs into professor with the instincts of a sybil.

Excerpt:

“You again,” she [the professor] says without glancing my way. “You’re not locked in the Bermuda Triangle.” This is stated like a professorial fact, one she may test me on next Tuesday.

I check my person and confirm I’m not locked anywhere; but as always, I’m intrigued by mention of the Bermuda Triangle, a place you may enter, but gamble on an exit. I respond, “I’m free to come and go.”

The professor predicts the student will need a new pillow and because the prof has been right in the past, and the old pillow is one of “procrastination,” the student runs out and buys a new one, “a down one, filled with pluckings from once-warm bodies.” One of my favorite lines in the story is “All of my unfinished business lies upon that pillow, snuggles along its two-hundred thread count loveliness.” Wonderful combination of image and meaning and this kind of language can be found throughout.

Full disclosure: Stefanie Freele was my student, and writing teachers are, for better or worse, said to have a professional interest in the success of their students. So let me say up front that I can take little credit for Stefanie's success. And very successful she is, as success is measured on the page.

Stefanie Freele is a terrific writer. Her stories are funny, surprising, poignant when you least expect it, and true even at their most exaggerated. Her books (this is her second) are literary gems. If you like fiction that packs a lot of story into a very few pages, if you enjoy the likes of Ray Vukcevich or Lydia Davis, if you wonder what Italo Calvino would have been like as an American woman raising a family, then this book deserves your attention.

At this stage of a young writer's career, someone is liable to say something like, "Stefanie Freele is a writer to watch!" That usually means that the reviewer expects better work ahead. The FAR/FC book arrived as expected. This is a great book to keep updated for FAR 121 and 135 operations. Keep in mind this is not a FAR/AIM, and the comments from people ordering the wrong product here are not reliable.

Content-wise, it's exactly what'd you'd expect... it's a book of regs.

I did manage to break the spine and lose a few pages from the binding while studying, though. Admittedly, I wasn't being particularly gentle. Still, this is a book that's going to be opened repeatedly to the same pages, and folded flat on the table so it doesn't close on itself. This might benefit from being spiral-bound, instead.
