Interesting read.

When you read the book you get general idea of the history of the USA. It's not too detailed (for example, there is very little knowledge of certain presidents and events)but it covers all the important issues well. There is some amount of statistics but I believe they just emphesize the facts presented.
Only minus comes from the "aftermath" of 9/11. It seemed to convict the Clinton administration for causing the September attack and left other factors, such as, Bush senior and his administration (and the Gulf war) with little thought.
I didn't also like the particular sentence of how CIA should have involved more deeply in the observation of other countries:
"Sometimes, nations need to play dirty tricks."
But I guess it can be difficult to be objective when you live in the USA and have experienced a catastrophy such as 9/11. Still, as an European myself, I was quite dissapointed with the end. The end bothers me a bit but at least it gives me an alternative perspective to think about.

Even the many academics who have done their best to learn Old Norse old-style, and then to teach it, will benefit from working through the course. As for students coming to the language without prior experience, they have it all: a very thorough grammar, but carefully spaced-out, explained without short cuts, and reinforced by exercises graded from absolute no-knowledge upward; well-selected and well-varied texts, with considerable use not only of the sagas but also of runestone-inscriptions, eddic poems and even notoriously difficult skaldic poems; and cultural background which takes in strange reports like that of the Arab traveller Ibn Fadlan (which gave rise to the movie The Thirteenth Warrior), maps, explanations and reconstructions...There is no-one better-qualified than Professor Byock to link up sagas with archaeology. About the Author
Jesse Byock is Distinguished Professor of Old Norse and Medieval Scandinavian Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and professor at UCLA’s Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. He directs the Mosfell Archaeological Project in Iceland. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Prof. Byock teaches Old Norse, the Icelandic sagas, Viking history and archaeology and directs the Mosfell Archaeological Project (MAP) in Iceland. He writes about Vikings, Iceland, feud, and archaeology. Jesse Byock is the author of Viking Age Iceland, and Feud in the Icelandic Saga. At Last!

At long last, we have a respectable modern textbook on the Old Norse Language. All previous resources were either out of print and prohibitively expensive used, or reprints of archaic grammars with outdated instruction methods. As an experienced language learner in general, I see everything here that I look for in a textbook. It reminds me a great deal of Wheelock's renowned textbook for Latin in both it's structure and teaching strategies. For those not in the know, that is a very good thing. Some will likely whine that the answer key (unreleased at time of writing) is sold separately, and I'm sure I'll find a flaw or two as I work through the book, but pickings are slim for Old Norse and such a giant leap forward in the field, by one of the world's most respected translators of Old Norse literature no less, deserves all the approbation it can get. I will likely replace this with a more thorough review once I have finished the course.

A whole lot of fun!

My 'husbondi" gave me this book last Yule; I am crawling through the book at a snail's pace, but enjoying every minute I spend on it. I am an enthusiastic student of languages; but I am a dilettante, not a linguist, and I just LOVE this book. A better, more serious student of language would probably like it even more than I do. Because both Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon were FULL of noun cases and adjective declensions, the bane of anyone who has struggled through German or Latin classes, it was exciting for me to realize that modern English is mostly free of of these horrors because Anglo-Saxon and Norse "knocked the edges off each other" in the Danelaw (that's not in this book, but it is a conclusion I have tentatively made after getting through the first third of this book). I think the "Most common words used in the sagas" method of teaching vocabulary is flat-out brilliant. Just to whet your appetite: land=land; egg=egg; bro(eth)r=brother; systir=sister; dottir=daughter; sonr= son; samr=same; at sja=to see; viss=wise; at hafa= to have, at lata= to let, skip=ship. Of course there are false cognates, too, and semi-cognates .... but learning a semi-cognate like "skip" is of course very cool because then you know where the word "skipper" came from.
I thought of giving it a "4" because there is no answer key, but I just enjoy the book too much. For folks like me, the fact that most of the text is in modern English is a blessing, not a problem!
I started an on-line basic Modern Icelandic course two months ago; what I had learnt from this book made it more fun rather than confusing, but many people might feel differently. I don't mind diving in and making a fool of myself in a new language, as long as the people I am trying to communicate with are good-natured.

Excellent Resource and best available option

Edit: The answer key has now been made available on the publisher's website, so I have adjusted my rating accordingly and the review below should be considered in that light. Thank you Professor Byock!

I have been reading Professor Byock's work on the Vikings since college, so needless to say, I was delighted to see this course made available, in my case for self study. I am now two chapters into the book, and I think it incorporates a wonderful strategy and method and has tremendous potential. However, I have two criticisms that prevent this from being a 5 star purchase: the first is that the answer key really needs to be made available *now.* I understand that perhaps the book is intended for college courses and oftentimes the answer key is presented in a "teacher's only" reader, but for those of us doing self-study, it is absolutely crippling and seriously hampers the ability to use the book effectively. It's boggling to my mind that they would release this book at all without making the key available as a download on the website. I believe the intention is to have the key in Viking Reader 2, which I would be happy to buy, but it is not available and may not be for quite some time. The two books should have been published simultaneously. My advice if your are considering purchasing this book is to wait until the Viking Language 2 book comes out. My second criticism of this course is that the audio accompaniment, which you will have to pay for separately, is very fast and not terribly user friendly. It is not read in such a way that it is useful for a student unfamiliar with Icelandic and very difficult to emulate or to parse in accompaniment with the reading. All in all, this is still however the best option on the market for learning Old Norse!

About the Author
SHARON WEINBERGER is the national security editor at The Intercept and the author of Imaginary Weapons: A Journey Through the Pentagon's Scientific Underworld. She is currently a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University and a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She has also held fellowships at MIT's Knight Science Journalism program, the International Reporting Program at Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She has written on military science and technology for Nature, BBC, Discover, Slate, Wired, and The Washington Post, among others.

An Agency for Unimagined Weapons

In THE IMAGINEERS OF WAR, Sharon Weinberger provides a detailed history of this interesting defense agency. The activities of DARPA have been varied—perhaps by design. The authors explain that DARPA was “established it as an independent agency that reported directly to the secretary of defense.”

Much of the earlier work of DARPA ended up being scrapped, transferred to other agencies, or just not helpful. For a while, ARPA, as it was known in early years, did research in satellites. Then, in 1958, this research was taken over by NASA.

Of course, there was one BIG invention that was not a flop. The DARPA engineers invented a networking system, which they called ARPANET. The author recounts a funny story about the first message transmitted over ARPANET: “At 10:30 p.m., on October 29, 1969, a one-word message arrived at a computer console at the Stanford Research Institute. 'Lo,' read the message. That was the entire content of the first transmission sent across the ARPANET. . . it was supposed to be 'login,' but the system crashed before it could be transmitted in its entirety, sending just the first two letters.

Of course, ARPANET later evolved and formed the basis for the modern internet.

Much of the book recounts the long and winding history of the agency, and all the zany weapons projects it invented. Much time is spent describing the agency leadership. A recent director, Dr. Tony Tether, for example, wanted his program managers to “have inside them the desire to be a science fiction writer.” The authors also note, that “More than anything, Tether loved Disneyland.”

Some of DARPA's invention turned out to be vital. And some weapon systems are still in use: “Today, the agencies past investments populate the battlefield." One great example is the Predator drone.

The real question, wonders the author, is where does DARPA go from here? What is the new mission? “More than fifteen years after the 9/11 attacks, and over two decades since the end of the Cold War, the dilemma for DARPA is finding a new mission worthy of its past accomplishments and cognizant of its darker failures.”

So all in all I found THE IMAGINEERS OF WAR to be a somewhat interesting read. My favorite parts were the discussions on the interesting inventions—especially, of course the DARPANET. On the other hand, I found the long discussions on the politics of the agency, and its leadership to be a bit much at times.

I should also mention that this book caught my eye because I had the opportunity to work on several defense projects funded by DARPA. In every case, I found the engineers on this projects to be of top-notch caliber.

About the Author
Jack Dempsey (1895–1983) held the World Heavyweight Championship from 1919 to 1926. Many of his fights set financial and attendance records, including the first million-dollar gate. Dempsey was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1951 and is considered to be one of the greatest boxers of the twentieth century.

YOUR FISTS WILL BE LIKE LOADED GUNS WHEN YOU LEARN FROM JACK DEMPSEY "THE ULTIMATE PUNCHER"

This is said to be the ultimate book on the subject of boxing from probably the most devastating puncher of all time. When Jack was in his 70`s two young thugs tried to rob him but Jack suddenly throw two lightening fast punches and the two guys were laying on the ground knocked out according to witnesses. Wow, even in old age Jack was still a powerful striker. Jack teaches you how to shift your body and put your weight into your punches with techniques such as "The Shoulder Twirl" so that your punches will be very powerful instead of weak arm punches which is how most people throw them. Using this knowledge will enable a 130 pound guy to easily knock out a 300 pound guy who doesn`t have the same knowledge. The arms are only delivery mechanisms. Think of your arms as whips. It`s the same principle as a cowboy using a whip which can cut flesh and be deadly. With this knowledge you don`t have to be the biggest or strongest guy in order to dominate in a self defense situation in prison or on the street. That`s why boxers are the best strikers in the world and a karate or kung fu guy can`t punch like a skilled boxer. Jack will also teach you how to defend yourself effectively and not get hit. Warning: When you learn this knowledge from Jack be careful how you use it. It can be very dangerous in capable hands. God Bless and Jesus is the answer :)

Enjoyed reading it.

I love books on fighting, and this one is no exception. Written by Jack Dempsey, so it's an older book...you can tell by the pictures and the language throughout. I really enjoyed it! I've been a martial artist for over 30 years, so I'm always looking to soak up as much knowledge as I can about fighting and self-defense. It's not exactly a "fighter's bible", but it was entertaining and informative. The book is a bigger than a TV Guide, but smaller than a magazine...Not too thick, either. The writing is big and easy to read.

This exceptional work totally deserves the FIVE STAR!!!!

I chanced my bucks with this book and turns out that it is not a disappointing investment.

There's plenty of useful information in this book that you can put into actual practice in your training regimen which makes it even more appealing to me. This is more like an "instructional manual" and the book was obviously designed for that purpose. You can't go wrong with Jack Dempsy's work.

PS I saw one of the review which said perhaps this is where Bruce Lee draw his inspiration. I totally agree with that. I've trained a little Jeet kune do in the past and Jeet kune do is the south paw version of Jack Dempsy's approach to boxing. Now Bruce Lee was learning to box as part of his martial art development. It makes me think that perhaps his boxing coach were familiar with Jack's method or one of those old timers boxers/ maybe Bruce Lee even read this book before. There's just so much resemblance to dismiss the possibility that Bruce Lee based his martial art on Jack's boxing approach. To call it a coincidence I think would not be a satisfying answer. There's 99 percent overlap between the two except the kungfu elements of parrying and kicking were part of jeet kune do's arsenal which present the 1 percent.

PSS Another comment were saying it was difficult managing the "fall-step". Where I found it interesting was that if you had been a runner like me who studied the "Pose Method running" - by Dr. Nicolas Romanov ~ you grasp the idea almost instantly. I have no problem to adopt the "falling-step" in my training routine because the idea of falling step was what constitute the main practice of Pose Method of running. If you don't know what is "Pose Method Running" maybe you should google it and I highly recommend the book. It has completely changed the way I run and anyone can run injury free. Ok sounds like I am reviewing for another book but just so that you know another good investment and running is also part of boxing conditioning so there you go. ( It is surprising how much you can learn from books given the time and patience!)

Great Info for the weary at heart

The author surely knows what he is talking about. A times, the author goes off in tangent to another reference to a word that was used to identify a subject. But then he soon returns. For instance , the spanish signature title as well as label" Don" is a short hand abbreviation for the Hebrew and Judasim term Adonai(A.......DON.....AI), which has been used as a title for Lord and/or Master; "Don Quixote." The Hebrews and Greek scriptures uses this term. I never knew this

Funny how this was written almost 100 years ago and no one knew about it. Such lost arcane knowledge is another testament to the tragedy of the human species as a whole. This is just a fraction of what we know compare to the universe of information that we don't know. Pioneers like Annis gave their lives to preserve this knowledge, We should at least pay it forward.

Five Star Humor

I agree, if you collect older pop culture books, you'll love this. I was about 6 when this thing came out, and maybe 10 when I snuck iinto my brothers' room to rifle through their things and found this. Even then I knew this book was silly. Hard to believe it was written by a doctor! Example, a couple goes to the doc because they cannot get pregnant. He asks what sort of contraception they use. "What are contraceptives?" the couple asks. Boom! Right away the doc has the answer! He realizes the man has been (trying to keep it clean here) "putting it in the wrong place." How did doc come up with THAT conclusion from a seemingly infertile couple by asking only one question? Just because the people don't know what contraceptives are doesn't mean they have never used them anyway! Were people really that stupid back in the 60s? Also, this was before abortion was legal, so the stories about dead women in bathrooms (from what I remember) scared the heck out of me. Now that I'm 43 and know a lot more I might pick up another copy to have even more laughs.

Interesting info... but somewhat prejudiced

Dr. Reuben's book is an update of his classic bestseller, and the reviews mentioning the previous edition make me happy to have grown up in a later generation that speaks about sex more openly.
The author's views have progressed somewhat since the earlier edition, but if you would like an unbiased view of sexuality, this is not the book to buy. For one, there is an anti-gay tone to all of the information on gay sex and culture. I am a 30+ hetero woman and I cringed at some of what was written here. I don't think authors should cater to a politically correct audience, but I was surprised that this came from a medical doctor with a specialty in psychiatry! At another point in the book, he talks about the IUD method of birth control almost as if it is responsible for sexually transmitted diseases. As far as I know, many women successfully use this as their birth control method...seems strange?! All in all, a fun read if you are interested in popular culture. But --especially for young readers-- there are much better books on the subject.

Great Introduction to Film Making

As an amateur just starting to get serious about turning my "home movies" into something people actually WANT to watch, I searched for a long time to find an introductory book that not only told you HOW to do things, but WHY you should do them.
After many disappointments, I found this book. While some of the references (script girl is particularly amusing) are very dated, the text mainly covers technique and avoids technology.
The illustrations and printing style point quite obviously to the book's mid-60s origin. An introduction by someone who remembers what it was like to shoot film in 1908 and knew D.W. Griffith personally should tip you off immediately that this book is something special. Still, the illustrations are clear and help illustrate the text's points very well.
In spite of what many recent amateur (and professional) film makers think, technology does not make your film good, it just makes it easy. TECHNIQUE makes it good. And that's what this book teaches in a very clear, readable, and understandable way.
Very highly recommended if you've had your fill of general introductory texts and are looking for real instruction and explanation for how to actually MAKE a film.

A stilll relivant clasic

While some of the references are somewhat dated the techniques this book promotes are still valid and useful. Some are now fashionable to flaunt like crossing views, but this makes some TV unwatchable because its jolting.

The concept to protecting shots seems to have been lost in the video world as an editor I find this much more useful that the so-called coverage junk that I often have to deal with. Reshooting exactly the same scene from the same POV 13 times is NOT useful coverage! The editor needs ways to cut around mistakes and build up scenes by mix and match to do this he needs well thought out shooting not endless repetitions.

If everyone who wants to be a director would read and pay attention to this book film and video quality would improve immensely!

While this book is an essential read for directors, DPs and cameramen; I would highly recommend it to gaffers, grip and sound guys.

An Essential Reference

I film youtube videos and wanted to learn more about cinematography. The book is about cinematography in a time when digital cameras and home studios didn't really exist. The book goes into great details about the basics of cinematography and skills that you can put into place immediately. The authors tone throughout the book is very conversational and I had a great time reading it. If you're new to cinematography I would start here first.
