Don't buy this book

The title promises a lot. But it doesn't deliver. This book is muddled and confused. It begins with a rather high browed treatment of the maths behind DSP then goes on to attempt to provide examples in C++. The examples are poor and unclear. The supplied code compiles under VC++ but not under any other platform without substantial reworking.
Over 100 pages of this 500 page book are devoted to a general discussion of the C++ language. Why? If I wanted this type of material I would consult my C++ manual. Here are C++ programmers who want to tell us the do's and don't's of the language, that feel the need to test newed pointers for NULL after allocating and before deleting!
As far as the rest of the book is concerned I found the examples and text unclear, pedantic and frankly quite useless. I will keep my copy only because I want to use the theoretical material. But this material was written for maths graduates - pages upon pages of proofs and derivations that provide little insight into the underlying principles and serve nothing. Hold off and buy something more usable.

I don't recommend this book

I am a computer scientist and I am trying to learn DSP.

I thought getting this book would help me with this process, because it seemed to be a book for computer scientists but it is not.

If you are a computer scientist and aren't familiar with DSP you will need another book to understand the DSP side of the book.

I got the book with no CD. That was very frustrating. Customer support was really bad. Make sure you get one with a CD.

Once I got the code (I found it on an ftp server somewhere, so I don't know if it is the latest disc, maybe there is a better updated one),I had to change many things. The main problems where:

The majority of projects don't compile in Visual Studio 2008.
The author uses PRE-STANDARD C++. This means that many things he uses don't exist today:
+flags like fstream nocreate don't exist today
+Include preprocessor directives with .h extensions will force you to rewrite things.
+I went through hell to fix(BYTE) errors.
+Some for loops miss variable type declaration.

All in all, this book is completely outdated in the programming side, and very confusing in the theoretical side.

Why reinvent the wheel...

A well written book good for both introduction to DSP and for advanced users. The CD has lots of C++ code written for the Windows environment which I find easier and much quicker to prototype DSP apps than using simulation languages or mathematics packages. The CD is well worth the price of the book. The code can read and write .wav files and includes a plotting application which is ok.

Frank M. Carrano is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of Rhode Island. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates.

One Of The Worst Books Ever Written

I don't even know where to start with the criticisms for this book. First the code examples are in-cohesive and then repeated a few pages later with no added value. The author makes no attempt to connect the code into a whole so that the reader can know what's going on on a macro level. Secondly, the book actually makes rather simple topics incredibly obtuse and frustrating. A single, simple topic will take up pages and pages of space with no actual elaboration or explanation of the topic. It's almost as if the author doesn't actually understand the subject himself. Luckily, the professor teaching this course also provided summaries of each chapter, which elaborated on the topic, using no more than 3 pages! I did end up reading all the chapters, front to back, because I'm OCD and am afraid of missing any little thing, but I can tell you that there's absolutely no reason some of the chapters take up so much space. Thirdly, the questions at the end of the chapter - they are the most badly written, error filled, and vague questions in any book I've ever read. When the professor would assign problems from the book, there would be pages and pages of forum posts on the class website asking for elaboration and pointing out errors. I don't think the author put more than a few seconds of thought on putting the questions together.

Books like this are like the bad teachers in high school. The ones who mumbled and just sat there, sometimes falling asleep at their desks, treating teaching as if it was some kind of welfare program. It makes me feel cheated of the education that I could have had, and the one I paid money for in this case!

Just in case someone thinks I'm saying all this because I did badly in the course. No, I did not do badly, I got an A in this class, with the help of the web, and the professor (who inherited the syllabus from someone else). However, I would have done far better, and learned far more, had another book been used.

Horrible book for data abstraction

I struggled with this book and didn't get much out of it except confused.... It talks about chairs in a classroom and uses them as data objects. I sold the book back when the course was over.

content is good...but....

First off, i want to say, this book isn't all bad; i ended up getting a print edition and (though i hate carrying it to class). the information is pretty solid. I really like the material covered. i think the author does a good job of balancing explanation with code examples-- though i wish each example was printed together rather than a skeleton of a class--then you have to hunt around for the method implementations... but i guess thats what the book website is for.

My one (and its a big one) complaint is that the kindle formatting, or lack of formatting, sucks. its like the publisher just converted it to pdf and is now selling it as a kindle book. its not. i am constantly having to zoom in/ around loosing my place while reading because i want to enlarge a font or take a closer look at some examples. it certainly is not worth the full price of the book. I am kind of surprised amazon let's them sell the book like that. if it weren't for the formatting issue, this would easily be a 4 star book.

This book brings trend following all together

The best summary of this book is in the foreword by Curtis Faith, original turtle trader. He recommends to budding trend followers that they first read Reminiscences of a Stock Operator to learn about Jesse Livermore. The original and the best. Then read Jack Schwager's Market Wizards books to learn about other successful traders and trend followers. Then, when you are truly ready to pull it all together into a coherent strategy, read Following the Trend by Andreas F Clenow.

I would personally read Trend Following by Michael Covel before this book, but that's just me. I've known about the turtle rules for a while now, and have backtested hundreds if not thousands of variations of it before reading Following the Trend. Although I am not a CTA nor am I live trading a diversified futures trend following strategy, almost every issue that I've thought about in the past is addressed in this book. Really. From what to do about contract rolls, to what markets to choose, Clenow shows that he's not just some author trying to make a buck. He's been there and done that. His thoughts and solutions only come from personal experience in trading this system. In particular there's a lot of information in here regarding running a fund. This is a book not just for the individual trader but especially for the would-be fund manager.

Before reading this book, I thought I pretty much had all the turtle/donchian channel/moving average concepts down. I didn't think there was really any knowledge that I lacked in getting the strategy up and running. I still found myself underlining a ton of this book, and realize now that I had plenty of gaps in my knowledge of diversified futures trading. This should be required reading material for anyone wanting to get into this type of strategy or business. Clenow is a pro, and I think it's rare for someone who has obvious experience in this business to share step by step what it takes to be a trend following fund.

Real deal trend following manual for pro's

Been trading Forex since 2005 and I have read many so called books on trend following but this books knocks it out he park, even though its geared toward larger size institutional level players the historical analysis and strategies you will see professionals use here are truly an eye opener. I have not seen anyone break the data down like this and provide some simple ideas one can play with and test. I am happy to have found this work and a real professional in the industry sharing some knowledge with the small players out there. This is not a one read and your done type book its something you can study and assimilate over time. Then again its said you can publish the rules to the holy grail in the news paper, and no one would follow it. The book touches on so many things I was wondering about like money management, trend filtering, breakouts, and diversifying correctly.

This is my first book review, and as the title shows - I wish this book was ONLY written for me. This is truly one of the best books I have read on trend following, risk management, backtesting and on running a managed fund.

You should be lucky enough to ever get this much information in one book - as opposed to Michael Covel's books, which lead to bits and pieces being given over time. You truly cannot compare the level of Andreas Clenow vs Michael Covel.. it is that far apart.

The in depth analysis of every year the strategy was being implemented over, clearly shows his understanding and frame of mind needed to execute such a strategy. Andreas Clenow manages money, Michael Covel has never managed money.

It's very simple and Richard Dennis said it best: "I always say that you could publish your trading rules in the newspaper and no one would follow them." The author of this book proves that with the year to year analysis in addition to the psychology needed to prepare for the kind of results trend followers REALLY experience.

I will not give more information than that.. like I said, I wish this was only written for my eyes to see.
