He could appear quite contradictory, changing his views as easily as he bought and sold securities. For instance, why would so shrewd an investor as Bernard Baruch prove reluctant to develop a property like Texasgulf, Inc., after helping to finance it? It was a decision that cost him an opportunity to make as much money as his adoring public always imagined him to have. Bernard Baruch made his money in the days of free and untaxed markets. As a governor of the New York Stock Exchange, he resisted the Progressive Era demand for government regulation of trading. However, as Chairman of the War Industries Board in 1918, he eagerly embraced a kind of wartime socialism, thereby setting the first American precedent for centralized economic planning. During the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s, he vehemently opposed America’s drift to statism, even as he supported the politicians who had engineered it. He was, in fact, one of the Democratic party’s top contributors—until he bitterly broke with President Truman. James Grant’s scrupulous research uncovered a wealth of previously untapped material from the archives of the New York Stock Exchange, unpublished legal documents, Baruch’s own trading records, and the early files of Texasgulf. We read startling details of events such as the infamous "peace-note leak" investigation of 1917, in which Baruch was accused of profiting on the unauthorized disclosure of state papers; his controversial career in Washington in 1918 and at the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919; his vital, behind-the-scenes role in the politics of the 1920s. I thought the book was poorly written and I had to put it down. I would recommend the autobiography by Bernard Baruch or "Snowball" the biography of Warren Buffet which is very well written. This book is boring and it is sad because the topic is so interesting.

Interesting tale of a Wall Street legend

I like James Grant's slant on this biography, focusing on the man as a trader. A tall order and I don't think it was accomplished. It read more like a regular biography which isn't entirely bad. You will learn a lot about Bernard Baruch which is worth the price of this book. I am a big fan of Wall St. history and Baruch plays a large part. Grant is a tremendous writer regarding his views on the markets via his newsletter and books but this book didn't really read like his other great efforts. In summary, if you are interested in Wall St history, you can't grow wrong with this effort.

Valuable workbook for 'Trauma and the Therapist' text

Let there be no doubt that this book and it's companion text 'Trauma and the Therapist' is a book written for professionals, not for lay persons. While some laypersons who enjoy and understand heavy psychological reading may thoroughly enjoy both books, this work book is geared toward the trauma encountered by the therapist (vicarious traumatization) while treating victims of severe abuse. It is not geared toward the client. It is about time that someone write a book and workbook for the professional who can endure as much trauma, vicariously, as the victim, particularly if treating a number of abuse victims. The impact on the professional had been ignored for two long. This workbook is written for the professional mental health provider more than the client. As is it's companion text. It is a terrific workbook if viewed with that perspective.

Helpful book for clinicians needing self care

This book was recommended to me because I was looking for ideas for self care to cope with working with the sex offender population. The book provides useful information on vicarious traumatization, how to recognize it, and ways to manage it. I am an Art Therapist and it has some creative and expressive techniques to handle feelings of vicarious traumatization that working with the abused or offender populations can bring up.

An outstanding program for workplaces.

I have used this workbook for years in the field of continuing education for human service professionals. The activities are without exception always well received and truly helpful to participants. Very few books present the facilitator steps so clearly. This book is appropriate for any organization that serves people in crisis or trauma. I don't see how you could go wrong if you follow the format pesented.

Fast Read, Entertaining!

I have been an on-again, off-again reader of Stephen King’s over the last decade or so (I was more loyal prior to that time) as sometimes I like his stuff and sometimes I don’t. The last one I read was the awful "Under the Dome," which was long, pointless and ultimately just silly, and I wasn’t thinking of reading anything else by him until I read a couple of reviews by Charles de Lint in a recent Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I trust Mr. de Lint’s tastes, so when he praised "Mr. Mercedes" and its follow-up, I figured I’d give them a try. Mr. Mercedes is the nickname given to a man who stole a car (guess what make) and plowed into a group of job seekers standing outside a building waiting for a job fair, killing 8 and wounding many others. Recently retired cop Bill Hodges has been drifting since his retirement, regretting that he didn’t catch certain bad guys, including Mr. Mercedes, but when he receives a letter purporting to be from the villain, instead of succumbing to depression as the writer intended, he begins to investigate. And, of course, the investigation just becomes more and more dangerous as he continues to delve into the mystery…. The reader knows who the culprit is from early on in the book, so the appeal is following the cat-and-mouse hunt as the suspense builds. King is as good as he ever was with respect to his characters and plotting, and he’s always great with the gross-out scenes (which here are not too many, thankfully). This turns out to be the first book in a trilogy, and I’ve already picked up the second, "Finder’s Keepers," with the third due out in mid-2016. Fast-paced popcorn reading, "Mr. Mercedes" just hits the spot; recommended!

King Conquers The Mystery Genre

Enough story synopsis reviews have been written to skip that stuff and jump to saying that this guy, Stephen King, seems to be able to write anything in any genre. This isn't a horror story, but King still manages to scare the reader on just about every level of the story. Are you carrying a little extra weight? King gives you reason to be scared out of your wits. Are you quick to judge people on their looks and characteristics? King will scare you with the mirror he holds up to your pettiness. His characters are nicely drawn here, even if I wasn't completely convinced about the love interest and the attraction. It still paid off and touched my heart. This is the kind of writing that's like a frog: dissect it and it dies. (How's that for high literary analysis?) There's an action made by a character that will stick in my mind forever, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. It just pops and stays there. You know what I mean? Yeah.

The tension at the end was almost unbearable. The finish was absolute but (here's that magic again) left the story open for another in a series. Bingo. It's out. And I can't wait to finish this review and get to reading.

I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM

Being the 4,914 review here for this book, I will not go into details. I have been having a love affair with Stephen King since his first work was published decades ago.

MR. MERCEDES is creepy, filled with true to life characters, ones that you will really care about. This reads like opening windows, one after the other being opened and giving readers thrills, chills, and suspense. The suspense and non-stop action really make this book a winner -- there were times while reading that I could barely sit still, I was so tense and braced for the next surprise.

This isn't a vampire/zombie/werewolf/secret powers type of book and that fact alone makes it all the more scarier -- REAL life is much more frightening than make believe. This book is about a troubled person, an act of horror and death, and the effects this one deed has on several people, their lives, and their commitment to each other and to helping save others.

Rumor has it there is a book coming out this summer that will feature some of the beloved characters from MR. MERCEDES. That's good.

As always, Stephen King continues to entertain and make us stay up into the wee hours of the morning reading, wondering, reveling in his magic. I highly recommend MR. MERCEDES to one and all. It will not disappoint.

Most helpful book on the topic of Sexual Lust I have seen!

Jim Vander Spek has written a great volume on the subject of sexual lust. First, I appreciate that he admits he did not go fully into the sin of lust. He never had a sexual relationship with a woman besides his wife. He heard a message by Billy Graham and it affected the way he allowed himself to indulge in sexual lust. He started to believe that "if, given the opportunity, one would have sex with one he was looking, it was then sinful lust" (Page 28). So this gave him permission to look at whatever as long as he did not actually have sex with that person.
Throughout this resource, the author points out truths that are not commonly taught. "Until lust no longer dominates you, your heart, soul, mind, and strength cannot be properly centered on loving God" (Page 73). He makes it clear that we cannot tolerate this (or any sin) in our lives. He lists many "rationales" men often use to excuse a certain level of dabbling in lust by way of the "illicit sexual buzz". He describes these rationales like this, "something that allows us to live with ourselves and to sleep at night. Most importantly, maintaining a rationale allows us to keep on doing those things that we know are wrong" (Page 63).
Also an important distinction between this resource (along with Every Man's Battle) and others addressing the issue of lust is the clear message of victory. Other books don't set a clear goal of victory over lust but rather give you techniques to manage the issue. The secular as well as many Christian counselors have taken the attitude of the "recovery movement" and look at sexual immorality as an issue of addiction where there is no room for victory but only a lifelong struggle to stay "sexually sober" (Page 109-111).
This author does an admirable job of drawing the distinction of true victory over sin even lust. "Christian abdication to the world's vision of endless struggle without real victory is pernicious since it misrepresents the nature of our new life in Christ. Liberation begins with an understanding that no sin can stand before the power that is at work in us and that the hold of any indwelling, life-dominating, and habitual sin can be broken" (Page 107).
The book is presented in two parts: Part 1 - Battling Lust and Part 2 - Learning from the Scripture. I have not even gotten to the second part of the book and I feel like this resource is the best I've seen about the issue of sexual immorality in the individual believer. In referring to Matthew 5: 27-30, "resorting to physical amputation as a means of eliminating lust is the result of a grotesque misunderstanding of the vital point Jesus was making. Instead of condoning physical self-mutilation, this teaching forces us to recognize that it is not merely observable actions of the flesh, such as masturbation, that Jesus is calling on us to eliminate. Rather, he confronts the lust that is taking place inside... Since blind, handless men are equally capable of generating lust, amputation simply won't work" (Page 134).
"The particular cup (i.e. TV, internet, magazines, etc) from which we drink our lust is not the issue. It is the lust itself that must be eliminated" (Page 136).
The author makes a strong case throughout the book that there are many teachers that are leading many astray because of a faulty understanding of lust and how to gain victory over it. "Teaching about lust which does not provide clear biblical direction spreads a smothering cloak over those who are struggling" (Page 139).

Crucial clarity and practical, life-changing truth.

In "Overcoming Lust", Jim Vander Spek has been incredibly transparent about his own struggles with pornography and sexual sin and how God has given him decisive victory. As a pastor for more than 25 years, I've walked alongside and ministered to dozens of men that have been enslaved by pornography and various forms of sexual sin. And yes, I have read many of the Christian books that have been written in an attempt to help men be set free from this amazingly destructive sin. "Overcoming Lust" may just be the most useful tool I've found thus far.

Jim's definition of "lust", it's distinction from "sexual desire" and the connection "sexual desire" has with a "holy" or "unholy" sexual "buzz", are insights that I haven't seen in the other publications I've read on the subject. When you add in his unique and thought-provoking perspective on Romans 7, very practical advice on using and memorizing scripture, and a fresh view of accountability with other men, before you even finishing reading, I believe you'll rejoice along with me at this latest expression of God's grace towards His people....especially men of God!

Tough Topic, But Must Be Addressed

How many guys would raise their hands if asked in public if they have a problem with ogling women or undressing them with their eyes? The answer is only a few brave souls. Yet as the co-author of "Every Man's Battle," this issue hits home for every guy. Jim Vander Spek has labored more than five years to give all men a valuable resource with "Overcoming Lust." His transparency is amazing and his advice is rock solid. If you've been looking for ways to combat those "sexual buzzes" that come your way--and sometimes that's nearly impossible to escape living in this sexualized culture, then get a copy of Jim's book today. You don't have to live another day in sexual bondage and you can experience God's grace in a wonderful way. This book is highly recommended.

This is a wonderful companion to the movie, "The Quiet Man". Des MacHale has done a painstaking job analizing and commenting on the entire movie. The script is included as well as the original story on which the movie is based. There are interviews with the cast and crew, photos of scenery, trivia about the movie as well as explinations for the Irish idioms within the movie! Read this book and you will learn just what "There'll be wigs on the green tonight" means!

Des MacHale book about "The Quiet Man" movie is a book that drew its information and sources from an earlier book written in 1990, about the same subject, written by Gerry McNee, ISBN 1851583211, "In The Footsteps of The Quiet Man". MacHae's unprofessional and unkind remarks and comments in several pages through out the book about the American Actors performances demonstrates his contempt and bias feelings towards these great American Actors, (ie Ward Bond and Francis Ford). Although it contains information about this movie, it is over priced and poorly written. After all anyone can reprint information word by word concerning a movie script. It lacks depth, and historical review of several important facts about the movie and factural information about the actors, the cast and crew that played in it. It has no references and draws the majority of its information from his review of the movie viewed several hundred times. Detail and attention are lacking.

11th Edition - A fantastic and concise textbook

If someone who is just starting to learn about digital systems or even someone who has years worth of experience in this field, asks me what's the best book in the market to get a thorough grip on the fundamentals of digital systems, this is the book. I may not have read every book, but I'll tell you this, it definitely won't get any better.

It elucidates every point with numerous and well explained examples, from what binary numbers are to analog/digital conversion methods, memory, RAM structure, etc. It is worded in almost layman's terms so the essence is easy pick up. Practical and relevant problems are given which further reinforce understanding. You also can't explain digital systems today without talking about VHDL and AHDL (Hardware Description Languages - HDL). Not only are the concepts explained through examples and diagrams, they're also covered by the HDL's, so if you're a college student where you'll most likely be introduced to them, this is ideal.

I don't I need to say anything more, as it's very clear how strongly I think of this book. Get it, it will make a huge difference in your understanding.

Tenth Edition is almost identical to the current Eleventh Edition. Most of the problems are identical. Others have four additional items added. Book is well written with many problems. Many answers are given but appear random as opposed to answers to every odd question.

This in the best book I have read introducing digital electronics. It is much more in depth then other books on the market. The examples go in to a level of detail that gives you a much better understanding of how certain concepts work. This is the only book I have come across that actually describes how the various logic families (CMOS, TTL) work on a transistor basis. Just great!

This book works very well as a support framework for practicioner: it comprises concepts of operations management avoiding to go into deep abstraction.

The book is filled with practical examples that show the real life of given concepts. It can clearly help someone to structure work with real problems in operations management.

People in charge for operations management are generally already fitted with tools and concepts that support decision-making. Complete coverage of the field is offered here, which gives broader view and help in any strategic decision. Some approaches are modernized in recent years, but everything given here is still valid as a basic reference.
