Highly entertaining, more like a show than audio book

I listened to Oath Of Moment today for the first time. Garro is a lone Space Marine on a very important mission at a most dire point later in the Horus Heresy. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone reading this review, so I won't say much more other than the action and drama in this story makes it one of the more fun Black Library stories I've heard. Space Marines, Imperial Guardsmen, Traitors and Cultists and legendary characters from the time of the Horus Heresy are involved. Even better, the music, sound effects and voice acting by Toby Longworth are extremely well done. It's difficult to talk about the story because it contains all kinds of interesting little revelations about the characters and intricacies of the Horus Heresy that should not be known ahead of time to maximize enjoyment. These Black Library Audio CD stories are much more than just normal audio books, they are more like audio shows like the radio dramas of old with acting, music and sound effects. The actor doesn't just read the story, he performs it and does many different voices and a dramatic reading of the lines. Recommended for all Warhammer fans and fans of SF action. It's a lot of fun.

Great Audiobook

I greatly enjoy both the 40k landscape and as an extension the Horus Heresy series. These audiodramas are great. I get to keep on driving down the road while still pumping 40k into my veins. I only wish they had the verbal track a little louder compared to the background. Between road noise and my not spectacular hearing, sometimes I have to replay parts a few times to get all the words figured out.

I have no legion!

This lavishly acted story draws the listened in from the first moment. On a world shattered by the Ultimate War, a lone loyalist Space Marine is sent on a mission to build a new legion from those were were shunned after the edict outlawing psykers and Librarians. In the most elegant example of the left and right hands not paying attention, the Sigilite sends Garro to collect these disenfranchised psychics and buil a new legion, a secret legion.

The voice acting is spectacular. The production value is everything I expect from Black Library and Games Workshop. Though short, I loved every second of it.

Great book for beginners

Book is split into 11 chapters, each one containing recipes. First chapter deals with setup of development environment (under Windows with SVN and using Netbeans for coding). Second chapter introduces basic WordPress framework concepts (hooks, shortcodes...). Third chapter is dealing with plugin settings and administration interface. Next two chapters deal with custom post types and working with page and post templates. Chapter 6 is continue using custom post type to handle user submissions.

Next chapter deals with mySQL tables and working with data from it in the plugin. JavaScript, jQuery and AJAX got one chapter. And Chapter 9 is dedicated to widgets, with Chapter 10 containing recipes on internationalization of the plugin. Last chapter will help you submit your (free) plugin to WordPress.org repository.

Each recipe is listing step-by-step instructions what to do and gives you detailed explanation on how it all works, including screenshots when needed. It is really easy to follow and replicate. Chapters 3, 4 and 9 are overall best chapters.

First chapter is something this book can do without, and it would be better to have added more WordPress specific recipes than including most of the recipes from first chapter that offer only partial information on things that are not WordPress related. Setting up SVN (or other similar systems) is much bigger topic than it might look from this book.

But, my biggest negative point is that it only mentions object-oriented approach in one recipe and that continues to use functions only. It would have been much better to use each recipe to build on top of one plugin, and to give it proper files/directories structure, classes for different elements. I guess author wanted to have each recipe presented on its own.

Space given to JavaScript, AJAX and jQuery should be bigger with better examples on how to load JavaScript files and to avoid conflicts with other plugins using JavaScript on admin side. Also, book shows how to use outdated ThickBox control, that is being replaced with other solutions since WordPress 3.4, and it would be better to skip that recipe.

I don't have any other complaints about the content, and I am sure that it would be very useful to beginners or intermediates with development for WordPress. Maybe some future revisions of the book will improve some of the chapters and expand them with more recipes or update them to be more current with the latest version of WordPress.

Overall, this is a very good book and another great addition to Packt WordPress library.

Learn how to build WP plugins from start to finish

I've read a lot of technical books to learn the different languages used to develop websites. Many of them merely scratched the surface of what the language is capable of or did not explain the concepts well enough to allow me to apply them to different scenarios. So when I was asked to review this book, I was hesitant. But I thought hey, I've been looking for some good books on this subject and it's a freebie. Happily, I think I have found another publisher, or at least author, whose books I will seek out.

WordPress Plugin Development Cookbook takes you through the complete process of creating and publishing Wordpress plugins. As well as leading you through the Wordpress system of template tags, actions and filters, it guides you through the process of setting up a development environment, creating widgets, employing AJAX and JQuery functionality and internationalising your plugin.

Each chapter sets out to teach a specific function using several steps(recipes) gaining in complexity to illustrate the core concepts. All the recipes make use of coded examples which you can code yourself or download from the accompanying website. The recipes also include detailed explanations of the techniques employed and resources for you to find further information.

I wish I had come across this book earlier. Having recently created my first plugin I spent hours searching the web and querying forums for explanations on using custom post types and processing user submitted data with redirects. Although I am competent in PHP, Wordpress uses its own functions and syntax. Getting to grips with those is necessary to leverage Wordpress's functionality and efficiency. You can get a lot of information wading through the Wordpress codex but this book presents that same information in a much more accessible and coherent manner.

The book does assume some experience with Wordpress and website development and experience with PHP would be helpful. More advanced readers will probably skim over some of the recipes but will find a few nuggets of useful information. Beginners will appreciate the first chapter which provides a detailed explanation to set up a development environment.

After you've read the whole book you will have built a fully functioning real world plugin ready to publish. More importantly, you will feel confident to build your own plugins.

Peter Drucker: The Changing World of the Executive - re-visited in 2015

I started to study Peter Drucker’s books in the seventies of the last century.

I read this book in 1985. In the last decade I have studied all books by and about Peter Drucker. It was fascinating to realize that all books by Peter Drucker – starting with the “End of Economic Man” published in 1939 – are full of meaningful, wise and thought provoking content independent of the year of publication.

According to Drucker 29 of the forty chapters in this book were published before as leading articles in “The Wall Street Journal”, chapter 23 was published first in “Chronicle of Higher Education”, the last chapter “The Matter of ‘Business Ethics’” was published first in “The Public Interest”.

Peter Drucker introduces Part I with a focus on managing people as a key management responsibility while self-control as a key “task” is often ignored. Drucker explains that managing people is a rather uncertain activity while self-control is almost always possible or should be tried and attempted.

When Drucker became 90 years old he published his very important small book “Managing Oneself” which should be studied and observed by young people as early as possible. The subject “self-management” should be taught systematically and integrated in leadership initiatives, because without appropriate self-management effective leadership is almost impossible.

In chapter two Drucker argues that like in the area of innovation even the most effective companies don’t achieve a high level of accuracy, he assumes less than 30%.

In chapter three Drucker provides five simple rules for small businesses to manage growth without losing control and drifting into crises.

In chapter four Drucker repeats his view – see his book “The Next Society published in 1950 – that the ratio of the top executive’s salary to the lowest paid worker’s salary should be in the range of 15:1 to 25:1 depending on the size of the company. In 1950 Peter Drucker wrote:
“Today, I believe it is socially and morally unforgivable when managers reap huge profits for themselves but fire workers. As societies, we will pay a heavy price for the contempt this generates among the middle managers and workers. … ”

In Part II Drucker explains the differences between healthy and unhealthy – good and bad – growth. He is urging top management to define realistic growth objectives, develop and execute an appropriate growth strategy to differentiate clearly between healthy growth on one side and fat and canter on the other side.

In chapter 23 Drucker is criticizing very bluntly “The Professor as Featherbedder” which induces to check the situation today.

In chapter 24 Drucker speculates about the Schools in 1990. From a European perspective it is evident that Drucker today is more relevant than ever: he claims for Thinking and Courage.

In chapter 26 Drucker argues that the retirement age 65 is over. It is evident that Drucker’s view has not yet been understood in Europe where the population is decreasing without immigrants while immigration is currently out of control.

In chapter 40 Drucker has no doubt that “A Return of Hard Choices” is unavoidable. If we compare the situation as described in 1982 with where we are today in Europe it is evident that Drucker’s messages have not been understood until now: policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic still think that economic politics is relatively painless and considered a “happy science.”

In his “Final Note” Drucker provides timeless and fundamental lessons about ethics which we find again in Drucker’s excellent book “The Ecological Vision” published in 1993, chapter 14 “Can there be “Business Ethics”, pages 195-214. Drucker writes: “The confusion is so great – and the noise level even greater …” He analyzes this fundamental question by elaborating on “Business Ethics and the Western Tradition: But – and this is the crucial point – these are qualifications to the fundamental axiom on which the Western tradition of ethics has always been based: There is only one code of ethics, that of individual behavior, for prince and pauper, for rich and poor, for the mighty and the meek alike. Ethics, in the Judaeo-Christian tradition, is the affirmation that all men and women are alike creatures – whether the Creator be called God, Nature, or Society … Casuistry: The Ethics of Social Responsibility … The Ethics of Prudence and Self-Development … The Ethics of Interdependence: … But there is another, non-Western ethics that is situational. It is the most successful and most durable ethics of them all: the Confucian ethics of interdependence … first codified shortly after the Master’s death in 479 B.C. ... considers illegitimate and unethical the injection of power into human relationships. It asserts that interdependence demands equality of obligations. …’Ethical Chic’ or Ethics.

Peter Drucker is closing is analysis as follows:

“Indeed, if there ever is a viable ethics of organization, it will almost certainly have to adopt the key concepts which have made Confucian ethics both durable and effective:
- clear definition of the fundamental relationships;
- universal and general rules of conduct – that is, rules that are binding on any one person or
organization, according to its rules, function, and relationships;
- focus on right behavior rather than on avoiding wrongdoing, and on behavior rather than on
motives or intentions. And finally,
- an effective organization ethic, indeed an organization ethic that deserves to be seriously
considered as ethics, will have to define right behavior as the behavior which optimizes each
party’s benefits and thus makes the relationship harmonious, constructive, and mutually
beneficial.

Mr Drukker presents a very smart outlook of management in the 80's with a prediction of the times to come. The book ends with a question whether this book will hold up for future readers. 20 years later the answer is yes. How are we defined as a nation in terms of our corporations ? This is described. How is sexual harrassment defined and handled? How do we compare to other nations such as Japan and Germany? There is no ego made by the author. He recognizes that he is an expert in the subject matter and lectures with clarity and without any sense of condescendingness.

About the Author
John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel,�Cup of Gold�(1929).

After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books,�The Pastures of Heaven�(1932) and�To a God Unknown�(1933), and worked on short stories later collected in�The Long Valley�(1938). Popular success and financial security came only with�Tortilla Flat�(1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class:�In Dubious Battle�(1936),�Of Mice and Men�(1937), and the book considered by many his finest,�The Grapes of Wrath�(1939).�The Grapes of Wrath�won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.

Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with�The Forgotten Village�(1941) and a serious student of marine biology with�Sea of Cortez�(1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette�The Moon is Down�(1942).Cannery Row�(1945),�The Wayward Bus�(1948), another experimental drama,�Burning Bright(1950), and�The Log from the Sea of Cortez�(1951) preceded publication of the monumental�East of Eden�(1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.

The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include�Sweet Thursday�(1954),�The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication�(1957),�Once There Was a War�(1958),�The Winter of Our Discontent�(1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America�(1962),�America and Americans�(1966), and the posthumously published�Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters�(1969),�Viva Zapata!(1975),�The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights�(1976), and�Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath�(1989).

Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.�

A masterpiece -- and I will never forget it!

John Steinbeck wrote this classic gem in 1937. It's been a Broadway play and there have been several adaptations of it in movies and TV. I was generally familiar with the story but this was the first time I actually read the book. Wow! I was completely blown away! This is the story of a two lonely and alienated men who work as farm laborers, drifting from job to job in California. Lennie is gentle giant, physically strong but mentally retarded. George guides and protects Lennie but also depends on him for companionship. Together, they have a dream to someday buy a little farm where they can grow crops and raise rabbits and live happily ever after. This, of course, is not to be as the title suggests. "The best laid plans of mice and men" is a line in a poem by Robert Burns, which describes how a field mouse's world is destroyed by a plow.
Steinbeck's narrative voice is seemingly simple in his descriptions of nature of as well as the details of the bunkhouse. His characterizations of the people are magnificent. We meet the other workers, all loners, and appreciate the beauty of the unique friendship between Lennie and George. We meet Candy, the old man who is outliving his usefulness. We meet Crooks, the black stable hand, shunned by the men and therefore turning to books for companionship. We meet the cruel Curley who taunts Lennie into a fight. And we meet Curley's wife, another lonely soul who uses her femininity to get the wrong kind of attention.
There's tension in every word and I found myself holding my breath, knowing that something awful would happen, my eyes glued to the page, the world of Lennie and George deeply etched into my consciousness. I was pulled right into the story, wanting to shout warnings as I saw the inevitable consequences. The ending was incredibly sad, but yet satisfying. It couldn't have ended any other way. It's a small book, only 118 pages long. But it is a masterpiece and I will never forget it. I give it my highest recommendation.

Post-Depression American Tragedy

"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck remains properly on the reading lists of high school students because of the regional imagery through succinct dialogue. Unlike "Grapes of Wrath," Steinbeck brings us swiftly into each moment, never letting us linger too long before walking us to the next place.

The American Dream has many variations, but always, it is about independence and the pride of being one's own man. Lennie and George want this independence more than most men, but have less than most men to get there. In their case, it isn't a white picket fence, but a farm where they can raise rabbits.

Lennie is not a bright man. He desires to care for someone and to be loved, but is unable to think past his own fear. George tries to protect him, but he too, although smarter than Lennie, is managed by his insecurity and foolishness.

The story surrounds Lennie and George's efforts to get and retain work on ranch near Soledad, and more so, toward their American Dream. The big picture is always with them, but it is the day-by-day difficulties they have with being outsiders. Their intrinsic inability to be free is sheer tragedy, as they both fail again and again to make the right decision.

It's a lonely story about two men who hope more than they can think, who are destined by their misery never to enjoy true companionship and happiness.

Few books are as thematically pure as "Of Mice and Men," which follows Man's search for self and meaning carefully. It is harsh in language and image, and the abstract ideas might be too much for younger readers to comprehend, but any intelligent teen will gain from it where John Knowles' "A Separate Peace" and J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" leave off.

I fully recommend "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck.

OF Mice and Men

I am a tenth grade student and I recently read "Of Mice and Men" for a school project. I thought it was an excellent book. I felt that the author, John Steinbeck, did a first class job with this novel. It portrayed the relationship between George and Lennie in a way that made you become very attached to the characters. You wanted to read more to find out if they ever accomplished their goals and to see if their dreams became a reality. George and Lennie are complete opposites; George is a small, quick intelligent man, while Lennie is a man of huge dimensions but has the brain of a child. Throughout the story Lennie acts in ways that infuriate George, but George will always be there for his friend because he knows Lennie needs him to survive. Lennie can buck barley like no one else because of his pure strength, but would probably starve to death if he didn't have George to provide his daily meals. I think that has to do with why this book has been banned in the past by schools across the country. Some people may be offended by how the mentally challenged person is shown in this story. It seems as though the view being expressed is that people with mental problems can't do anything for themselves. They are also a constant threat to others because they cannot control themselves. Lennie didn't realize what he was doing was wrong until it had gone too far. These are stereotypes of mentally retarded people that some people may believe are reinforced by this novel. They are lead to believe that this book is discriminatory towards the mentally challenged. Parents whom believed this did not want their children reading this book because they did not want them to be exposed to these types of ideas. Also, Curly's wife does not fit the traditional mould. She is unhappy with her marriage and is not completely loyal to her husband like a conventional wife should be. She is always flirting with the men that work on the farm. Some adults believed that this was unacceptable behavior to expose to children. I don't think that a school today would even consider banning this book because cultural standards have changed greatly from when this book was first published in 1937. I also don't believe that this book should have ever been banned. It is a great book that takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Once you get started it is almost impossible to put down. The ending is also written to perfection. It is unpredictable and is incredibly moving. I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it anyone.

I suppose it should go without saying that a book about VB-5 Control Creation Edition would be a little beyond the level of introductory programming. After all, that software package was never intended for beginners as it was designed expressly for creating controls to be used in other programs. This isn't to say that a standard program can't be written with CCE and that it can't be used to learn the language, but that is not its purpose. Microsoft included a compiler that works only for controls creation and not for standard programs. Standard programs can be written and 'run' within the development ide, but cannot be compiled into executables for stand-alone use.

The author takes a gradual approach to controls building, starting with some simple designs before tackling web and database access. This book won't make anyone a controls 'guru' but it will teach the fundamentals. After completing this book a person should have a solid understanding of controls and should be able to build on that foundation and create controls of their own design. There are certainly many more advanced books available, books that contain a lot more depth of material, but for someone trying to learn from the ground up they might prove to be a bit daunting.

Well, here it is 2013 and Active-X is an old technology. And yet, Visual Basic 6.0 (and probably 5.0 as well) is still hanging around doing valuable work for people who want an easy-to-program platform for rapidly deploying applications. I guess this means that Active-X isn't quite dead just yet and this book still has a purpose in life. For those interested, Microsoft pulled the plug on VB-5 CCE a few years ago and it has become rather hard to find nowdays. Some diligent searching on the web is almost guaranteed to result in a good download, though, so don't give up. If you already have VB-5 or VB-6 you can make use of this book without the CCE since both of those platforms include that functionality built in.

Great book even though its out of date!

This book is a dream! It explains in a few, well written words what ActiveX controls are, how they differ from regular programs, and what are the parts that you must code to make them work. That means even though 5.0 was long ago and far away, it was still easy for me to create controls today because I understood what "parts" made up the "whole". This book is a thin book. It has been my experience that thin computer books are either garbage, or condensed jewels of knowledge that don't need a lot of words to get their point across. This book falls into the latter category.

I wanted to learn something about Control Creation

However, I began to hit a brick wall with some of the examples (after the 5th chapter). Book assumes you know VB language, and that you just need to know how to use it to create activeX controls. Although it wasn't as helpful as I had hoped, I did give it 4 stars because a VB programmer WILL find this book useful. And the stuff that I could do made for some great learning about control creation.

There are so many great things to say about Being Human, I don't even know where to begin. Strong characters and beautiful, primal lessons make it hard to put this book down. Written for teens and young adults, C. Nielson Taylor's writing style and wisdom has you hooked from the beginning, making it a great read for any age group. I love that it was written for the younger generation because those are the people who will be taking on the world one day and Being Human offers a lot of food for thought about how "civilized" we really are. I'm really looking forward to the reading next book and seeing how the story develops.

For all of you parents of young adults, and for all of the adults who love to read ANY good book, I just finished "Being Human", by C. Nielson Taylor. A fantastic read for these times we live in.Rich characters, great message, and part one of a trilogy! I would highly recommend it as a Christmas gift, and would like to see it in schools as well. It was so nice to read a book that not only thoroughly entertains, but also provides much food for thought. I highly recommend this book. C. Nielson Taylor has delivered us an amazing first novel. I am very much looking forward to the next book!!!!!!

I was totally drawn into the story before I even finished the first page! Taylor's writing style is refreshingly spontaneous and intriguing as she skillfully develops both the characters and the plot from several angles at once. This book was obviously written for young adult readers, but I couldn't put it down. I can hardly wait for her 2nd book in the series! I gave it five stars, as Taylor is not only a skilled writer and storyteller, but the life lessons contained within these pages are valuable for readers young and old alike.Being Human

About the Author
Steven E. Schier is Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science at Carleton College, where he has taught the last thirty years. He also directs the Carleton in Washington program, an off-campus term of study he founded in 1983. Schier is the author or co-author of seven books, including Panorama of a Presidency: How George W. Bush Acquired and Spent His Political Capital (2008) which won an “outstanding academic book” award from Choice magazine. He has edited six books, including The Postmodern President: Bill Clinton’s Legacy in U.S. Politics (2000) and High Risk and Big Ambition: The Presidency of George W. Bush (2004). Schier has written about Obama’s election in his recent book The American Elections of 2008 (2008), coedited with Janet Box-Steffensmeier. His most recent works are the edited volumes Ambition and Division: Legacies of the George W. Bush Presidency (2009),Transforming America: Barack Obama in the White House (2011) and the thirteenth edition of Presidential Elections: Strategies and Structures of American Politics, coauthored with Nelson W. Polsby, Aaron Wildavsky and David A. Hopkins (2011).

Todd Eberly is Chair of the Political Science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He specializes in social welfare policy as well as partisanship and polarization in American politics. Professor Eberly’s first book, American Government and Popular Discontent was released in June, 2013. His second book, The Rise of Ideology in America, is expected from Rowman and Littlefield in early 2016. He is an advisor to Project Vote Smart and his analysis and commentary have been featured in the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, Public Radio/Television, ABC and Fox News as well as Al Jazeera America and CTV. He has served as an expert witness in Voting Rights Act challenges to gerrymandered Congressional districts and has consulted with the centrist organization Third Way. He was named one of the most influential voices in Maryland politics by Campaigns and Elections magazine. In 2010, the St. Mary’s College Student Government Association honored him with the Faculty Student Life Award. He lives in Southern MD with his wife and two daughters.

About the Author
Dr. Berg is an award-winning teacher and textbook author. She received a B.S. in science education, an M.S. in botany, and a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of Maryland. Her research focused on the evolutionary implications of steroid biosynthetic pathways in various organisms. Dr. Berg taught at the University of Maryland at College Park for 17 years and at St. Petersburg College in Florida for 8 years. During her career, she taught introductory courses in biology, botany, and environmental science to thousands of students. At the University of Maryland, she received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards, including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching. During her career as a professional science writer, Dr. Berg has authored or co-authored several leading college science textbooks. Her writing reflects her teaching style and love of science.

This a very good book. It has quizzes and a lot of information. I have learned so much from this course already. It is very interesting and I am even considering switching my major.

Pretty great intro to botany textbook. I bought this for my Introduction to Botany course at the University of Florida. It was an edition behind what everyone else was using, but the information was the same. The chapters are in different orders sometimes, but it's still the same book essentially. I learned a lot from this book. Great textbook that's not dry and not overly difficult to read.
